From what I've read, the science is under 5000K heat results in a longer beam of actual usable light. Where as a higher heat rating creates a "pretty spectrum" but less usable light. For my purposes, I think the 8000K is just fine.

(shrugs) Ok, whatever works. The xenons in my X3 work great, and I do a fair amount of dark backroad driving (because C-ville is in the middle of nowhere). I take the country roads at 100-120km/h because the headlights provide that much illumination. The adaptive swivelling function is crucial as well.

Maybe that's because it's an SAV though. The xenons on the 325i are aimed far too low. The high-beams don't seem as powerful either.

Sometime back i complained that i thought my HID's seemed a bit dimmer but i got the same technical reasoning that higher K means bluer but not brighter. But from your perspective you say a better light pattern. Could you elaborate.

As for it being a "common mod", I'm not sure. I know they are a PITA to replace because you have to remove the entire front clip of the car and pull the headlights out. However, I would recommend the change, they look great and like I said, as far as I'm concerned..better light patterns.

HID bulbs cost $50 bucks each. Even for the good OEM ones. Its by law that OEM HID's have to be 4300K I believe. 4300K is the best temp for highest light output (lumens) meaning you can see further down the road, than with higher K lights which are blueish and darker. 4300K = closest to white 6000K= blue 8000K= purple. I don't mind 8000k so much except when someone puts hid's inside a halogen headlamp. The glare they have is pretty annoying. OEM HID headlamps have to be used with a projector headlamp to prevent the glare.
