Yes, you can use Replay or Tivo with satellite, cable or even the plain old antennae for broadcast TV. The standalone DVR's have an input and output, which means that when they are recording, you can’t watch something else unless you have a second box (satellite or cable) or you watch standalone cable or broadcast TV. That also means your TV has to have more than one input. As for how much you would pay, if you pay the monthly price for Replay or Tivo, the systems that the satellite or cable company offers are a better deal. You can do the onetime price, but with technology, it’s time for an upgrade a few years down the road, which just happens to be the breakeven point.

I think, Im leaning towards the DVR provided by Comcast. The MAJOR drwaback with TiVo is that you can't dual-tune while having a cable source. The latest news is that Comcast and TiVo will be partnering up, so hopefully down the road, we will automatically get the TiVo software with Comcast.

I have the Comcast DVR and I think it works great. The box is made by Motorola. I believe sometime early next year we should seeing more of the Comcast/Tivo partnership. Comcast is also going to start rolling out their phone service around the Chicago area soon as well.

Smiley, when you get closer to new crib being finished, look closely at Direct:
they are supposedly going with their own intra company PVR system, in lieu of the old/formerTivo add-on. Also, DISH, Direct's competitor has had a PVR system for a long time, (I have one of the earlier systems w/only 45 hrs of hard disc recording, but we love its simplicity and ease.) The newer DISH offering is up to a 100 hrs now, I believe. Not trying to sell you DISH vs Direct; look at both and decide.

I have the Scientific Atlanta 8300HD box. Dual tuners and dual HD recording. It works great. The earlier SA8000HD was clunky, slow, and LOUD, and was painful for a first-gen box. The 8300 has one-touch recording, 160gig, faster guide, and very easy series recording and hard drive content management. It has HDMI-out, USB, 1394, but they have not activated the 1394 ports yet.

Time Warner does not have the 'assignable' DVR's available yet where you can send content on the DVR's hard drive to any other cable box in the house, in HD (does anyone have this yet?). They are telling my 1Q 2006 for those boxes. Currently I can send video from the DVR to the other TV's but not in HD

The HD DVR on TW Cable is $6.95/month. Pretty good deal IMO. But I still hate cable companies.

Thanks, MD! I'll check out Dish. Now that I'm getting closer, I need to do a lot of comparison shopping -- traditional telephone vs. VOIP, DTV vs. Dish, Sony LCD TV vs. a DLP/LCOS set

How's your TV shopping going? Sounds like you have a good amount of time to watch prices before you head down south. I don't want to pull the trigger to early on the TV, but I'm already noticing price drops on rear projection and plasmas in the Sunday circulars (not that I'm committed to the BBs and CCs of the world). I'm sure there will be some additional Labor Day savings. However, I would probably save more if I wait for Thanksgiving. But do I have that kind of patience -- I will have been in the house close to a month with my current TV!

Tivo has much more functionality than the DVR that Comcast can offer, for now. Tivo will be providing Comcast with more functionality in the near future. You can go to tivocommunity.com for more details. The only reason I would consider a cable company DVR is for HDTV. The Tivo HDTV tuner costs way too much money.

I do love TivoToGo, and the music and photo features, I use them much more than I thought I would.

Yep we have the phone service as well. $10/mo. The quality is same as phone line. Thanks, for your experience with Comcast DVR. We will go with this. Hopefully, TiVo will be implemented in the near future.

No phone service in Chicago yet, but will look into once it gets here. I know someone at Comcast and I'll see if I can find anything out about the whole Tivo thing.

The ReallyBigScreen TV "shopping" is currently limited to reading ads, and cruising the net...but, prices and, more competition in the high 60 -70 inch size means prices are eroding by the week. You have a good memory,

, as we don't "need" the new screen until December, when we get to the FLA joint for the season.

Our sole cable co. there, is Comcast, which is Really pricey if one loads up on HDTV, std cable w/some premium stuff, internet, etc. WTF are these companies thinking?! Their ala'carte menu reads like having to pay top buck in buying a stripped car and then having to pay for power steering, the fooking steering wheel, etc.

My Daughter has Comcast in CH,NJ and her bill is about 60% of what the Collier County, FL Comcast Nazis want for same bundles of service she has.

NEway, time is on my side, and we may even slide the first month watching our bedroom(s) tubes until after the holiday buying frenzy when stores like BestBuy and C.City are trying to make their nut by the Jan blowout sales.
No biggie and no hurry, but the models that come and go like weekly, are very confusing to us non-techies, lol!
