Ok, you make a point. But that still does not change the fact that there is two very separate meanings to the word Marriage.
1) It's Religious context.
2) It's State/Contract context.

If we were living in a society where marriage was only an institution recognized by Religion. I might entirely agree, depending on your Religion.

But, since MARRIAGE is an institution of Government with Contracts, Divorce, Benefits, etc. and Marriage is also recognized as an institution for people who do not believe, practice Religion at all. Then putting a value system on it that only recognizes it's religious significance, is to discredit all the non-religious conventions of the practice.

I don't understand either.

terI think Government and State messed it all up when they used "marriage" m for a non religous union. Simply what I mean is that they could have given it a different name, but the exact same benefits, and ramifications (of divorce).

Recognize a religious groups "Marriage" and 2 individuals with no religion to have a "civil union" or whatever you decide to call it. Maybe all the people who object to this sort of thing (as the ppl given the option above) can not disagree to 2 people deciding to spend the rest of their life together, as well as getting the benefits of those who are in a religious union.

Gee, wonder how long the Government has been hand in hand with religion?

Since the beginning of time. But what I mean is that if you want to seperate the difference (and only in the case of marriage which doesnt make sense) - then you have to change the name marriage.

I personally think marriage is a religious thing, if someone with no religion wants to get "married" - maybe they should have another name for it.
