Mac help needed with .doc file

I'm doing website coordination for our town's soccer league. I can usually answer the tech questions. The latest is from a Mac user (and I don't have a Mac).

She says when clicks on the following link Overview that she can't pull up the document. It is a Microsoft Word document (.doc).

I'm wondering if it is because she doesn't have Microsoft Office installed? Does Mac natively handle .doc files without Office installed?

I'm wondering if a pop-up blocker may be a problem because it opens in a new window/tab.

I've found that Microsoft has a known problem with "Microsoft Office for 2008 for Mac Service Pack 1". So maybe that's it. I'll have to get more info from the user experiencing the problem. The link above says "Microsoft is aware of an issue that prevents Office 2008 for Mac Service Pack 1 from opening an Office document correctly when you double-click the document or when you download the document from a Web site."

Thanks

Get rid of the ".dot" extension (portion of the filemane). .dot refers to Word template file. I was able to download the file and after ai deleted the ".dot" part of the filename Word 2008 for Mac opened the document.

Thanks for your response but there no .dot in the filename. The filename is "Overview of u11 - u14 final.doc" and the full link is http://files.LeagueAthletics.com/Ima... u14 final.doc

That's funny... I'm now viewing this message/link from my work PC and there's NO .dot in the filename!

An hour earlier (from my home MacBook Pro) the .dot was there and I had to delete it. Mind you I was using Safari on the Mac. As for the issue of OS X previewing a .doc document (without Office installed) I do believe it has that capability.

When I clicked on your link with my Mac, it downloaded it onto my desktop. It then opened up using the text edit program. I am viewing it no problem. Have her look at her desktop to see if it was downloaded to it . If it's a potential MS Office issue, have her open it with her text edit program instead.

Thanks. Unfortunately, I don't have access to her desktop. I emailed her the file so she does have it.

I think it's probably the Office 2008 for Mac SP1 issue that MS has acknowledged. I've asked her what version she has. If it is this, there are probably other Mac users that will have the issue too

Thanks guys.

If someone who has "Microsoft Office for 2008 for Mac Service Pack 1" could try it, I would appreciate that.

maybe she does not have MS Word at all, and the Word '08 issue is just a coincidence.
Anyways, she should be able to open it in Google Documents. It's a great tool to have.

I clicked on your file and it down loaded to my desktop in a snap and opened with Microsoft Word 2004.
