How many horses does a mini have under the hood anyway? I had a guy on 287 with me yesterday driving like a mad man. I know it's agile but that thing was pretty quick. He was in and out of traffic

If you drive like a normal person, you won't get anywhere near the posted EPA numbers for the Prius. There's a reason why I did not see a single Prius at all during my trip to Europe.

The base Mini in the US has 120bhp from a 1,6 litre. The Mini S has 175bhp from a turbocharged 1,6 litre. Yes, they do have a lot of zip!

The Prius weighs about 350 lbs more than the Corolla. Even at highway speeds, the electric engine still is working. The reason why city mpgs is better is because at very low speeds (or when you are stopped), the gasonline engine actually shuts down. But the electric/hybrid engine stays on always and is always contributing to better gas mileage.

Not sure that is true Eric...At least that is not what I heard and read.

  • Under low loads, the Prius can be powered solely by the electric motor with energy coming from the battery pack. This provides for silent driving for short periods of time. This is in contrast to other “mild hybrids” such as Honda Civic, Accord, and Insight which use the electric motor simply as a power assist to the gas engine, and can never run on the electric motor alone.
  • Under heavy acceleration the Prius integrates both the electric motor and the gas engine, again with additional energy coming from the battery.
  • At highway speeds the Prius uses the gas engine to move it along, generating additional electricity to recharge the battery if needed.

At highway speeds, the Prius is using mostly the gas engine, but the electric/hybrid engine is still in use. The car has a nice computer screen on the console, and when you're not using the nav or the radio, you see an animation that tells you which engines are currently in use and what is going on:



On the highway, the electric motor charges up, but as soon as it's charged up, it then starts contributing power until it's low again, and then the cycle repeats. In the picture above, the gasoline engine is being used while the electric motor is charging. But the arrows reverse every couple of minutes during highway driving.
