well... the x5 wasn't designed as a primary tow vehicle.. otherwise it would have transmission and differential oil coolers and other heavy duty equipment dedicated to towing (alternator, more cooling out of the radiator, gearing change, etc etc etc) like a F350 Powerstroke truck...

i'm sure it does fantastic but as a long term dedicated hauler, i'm not convinced its the correct setup and longevity may be compromised... dedicated hauling does alot of punishment on the vehicle... i have yet to hear of an x5 that tows ~6000lbs always every weekend... with trips from 300 to 1000 miles one way...

are you asking oil for the x5? i used the standard 15w30 castrol or mobil 1 synthetic for the engine (i got the full oil change kit a few times from crevier - i used it in the oil change diy).... the tranny oil i bought from the dealer also.

Have to agree with Hayaku on this one..

The X5 does a great job towing, I don't know if I would use it everyweekend to tow though. Once a month, fine.. But every weekend....
I guess it could do the job but if I needed a dedicated hauler, I would go with a dualey diesel. Especially with the prices on fuel these days.

And, the X5 does not have a lot of cargo room for trips to the track. Yes, you can fit the essentials, but no luxuries.

-- Again, I had no problems what so ever hauling 800 miles with my X5.. It was as happy as a clam. But is it not a dedicated hauler.. Just like my Pcar is not a dedicated track car.
They both do the job competently but there such a thing as too much. It's also using a luxury vehicle for "constant work duty".. Meaning, although it works, it will beat the hell out of it. So why not get a beater like a ford F-350 diesel with a huge bed for transporting gear..

Well, your tranny is probably taking the harshest beating. You probably want to go heavier than the factory weight, no? If you are even considering a dedicated hauling alternative, the next Tundra is supposed to be really good. I wonder how the 3.0D would do in your situation. You could add a tranny and diff cooler yourself.

Really consider the BMW 1100S (the boxer cup version has no centerstand). I have one and I love it. You can do a lot of things with this bike - make it a commuter, turn it into a sport tourer or, as Nate Kern has proven this year, race the heck out of it. You can make the bike as comfortable as you want, you can add bags and go two-up and some models have heated hand grips and ABS.

With a new R1200S out soon, new and used R1100S bikes are reasonable. Stop at a dealer and see what kind of deals are going on. They might still have low financing and a few free months of payments.
