Wifi question, laptop vs. desktop
At home, both my desktop and laptop connect to the internet via wifi. My desktop seems to maintain a constant connection to airport. If I leave my desktop for several hours and then come back to it, it wakes up and has immediate access to the internet. laptops, if I even close the cover for a couple seconds and then reopen it, the connectivity to wifi/internet gets interrupted, almost as if the Laptop severs the connection and then reconnects when the cover is opened, which seems to take between 5-10 seconds. So my question is, if both computers are wifi and both go to sleep and are then woken up, then why does the laptop need to reconnect to wifi while the desktop maintains it's steady connection? I assume that laptops may have some sort of power saving, cut off. But I think it also happens when laptops are plugged in A/C.. Any ideas why this happens? Is it possible to reconfig laptops to maintain wifi connectivity even when the lid closes? Thanks. B

It will depend on your power settings. Are you sure your desktop is going to sleep or just putting the monitor to sleep - I have my desktop set up just for the monitor to go to sleep, but not the main system box - this is the most common desktop setting and, I believe, the windows default. Whereas laptops normally go properly into sleep mode to preserve battery power. It is easily configurable using the power management functions in Control Panel.
Start -> Control Panel -> power options then look at the system standby settings if it says Never then it is only the screen that is going to sleep and not the actual system. Personally I would never set a laptop to that as it would drain the battery leaving it in that setting. For the screen closure on the laptop you need to go to the advance settings and set the setting appropriately for when you close the lid. Again setting it to Do Nothing will drain your laptop battery. all of the above based on XP......no idea about Vista

I'm pretty sure he's talking about mac
 and that happens to me too. Annoying, but I live with it.On my old iBook, it eventually stopped connecting after awhile. Fried Airport card...

Doesn't happen to me
 I can check my system settings if you like and let you know but my iMacs and MacBook Pro all operate the exact same way as far as sleep/internet goes.

It's managed via power settings in WIndows.
Don't know how to do it in a Mac. But considering that mac's are so superior i'm sure that there is a way to do it

This issue may have more to do with reception. Have you tried opening the laptop in the same room with the desktop and time them both to see how long each connects? My macBook pro takes a couple of seconds to find my network but that delay varies at times and doesn't seem to be a big deal. Thanks everyone. I will play around with power settings. What I'm hoping I will find is an option that allows my laptop monitor to go to sleep but not the CPU if I have the laptop plugged in. But if it's running under battery, the wifi can disconnect after 1hr of inactivity or so.
Barry, I have a pretty big house and my wifi has to travel through lots of walls. Last night I thought distance may have something to do with it so I moved one of my repeaters to the bedroom to see if it helped. And it did... Help that is. --Instead of a 5-10 second wait time, it was more like a 2-3 second wait. And sorry for bringing my Apple discussions here. There just haven't been enough: Pitbull Threads Metrosexual fashion threads Political threads... ...To keep me occupied. So figured I would post my dumb questions here. At the very least, I get to see Michelle's Cow Avatar acting like a porn star on casting day
