Anybody have, or have experience with the HP Intel Atom N270?

So the Ms. is getting her Masters in Special Education, and is currently enrolled in an advanced program, which will allow her to finish the program in 1.5 years. She will be student teaching next semester, and I'm looking to purchase her a relatively robust mini-laptop which will be ideal for her lugging to class weekly. She has another laptop, which is roughly a year old, that will be used while she's at home. However, she's looking for something basic to be used in conjunction with a wireless aircard, can be used for basic Microsoft Office programs, and weighs ~3 lbs. She doesn't like Macs, so I've been looking at buying her the HP Intel Atom N270. Anybody here have the N270, or know of someone that does? If so, what are your impressions, and what are you currently using it for? Thanks in advance.

they look good, but make sure you get a HDD and not the solid state. If the battery dies, anything stored on the SDD is lost.

That's good information to know. Thank you.

Where did you hear that? That is certainly not true. The operating system (windows xp) comes installed on the SSD, and the battery is not even installed in the laptop on delivery. Plus, you can change batteries on the go.

SSD works exactly like any other hard drive, except no moving parts. If you have an iPhone or iPod Touch, they have SSD memory. Your music is not lost if your battery dies either. SSD are faster than HDD, and they use less power so your battery lasts longer. The only downside of SSD is capacity and price. The same price will get you a much larger HDD than SSD.

As for the Intel Atom, it is not the quickest processor, but it's great with battery life. It's good for basic internet tasks, but don't expect to do a lot of multitasking or much in the way of multimedia.

You're right, it depends on the type of SSD. I should have said "could be lost".

I have the MSI Wind U100. It is great and the battery has lasted about 5 hours with 1/2 brightness and wifi on.

If I was buying a netbook right now I would have a look at the Acer Aspire One with XP and 120g HD. It is on sale at Tigerdirect for $299. It has pretty good reviews.

I bought the HP Mini 1033 recently and I like it. It's enough to use, boots up really fast, and the material is nice. But the screen is not that great. It presses against itself when I move the computer, and it doesn't bend that far back. It also has funny swirl patterns on the cover.

But I would recommend an ASUS EEE 10". They are less expensive $380 on amazon, have more features, and it even comes with a soft case.

A good thing to do is to try typing on these netbooks before purchasing. Some of them have really tiny keyboards, and if you have large hands or even medium size hands, it could be very uncomfortable to use.

I tried both playing with the Asus, HP Mini, and the Acer in the store, and the only one I could comfortably type on was the HP Mini. It has a slightly larger keyboard than the others, yet the overall size of the computer is not any larger.
