There is trouble in dem dare hill though.

With the iPhone's popularity and the new, less expensive model, it's clear that in Apple's mind there's only one thing holding them back from domination of the U.S. smartphone market: AT&T.

Apple does a lot of things passive-aggressively, but they don't do anything accidentally. At the iPhone 3G S announcement today, they prominently announced two features and then pointed out or implied that AT&T won't support them at launch. Weirdly, MMS and tethering are both features AT&T supports on many other phones. I get the feeling that if the two companies had really wanted to work together, AT&T would have been right up on that announcement screen.

Apple is clearly chafing at the terms of their AT&T exclusivity agreement, though they'd never admit it in public. AT&T has become increasingly dependent on the iPhone to attract new customers away from other carriers, but it keeps getting less clear what Apple is getting out of the deal. AT&T won't support all of the iPhone's features, their network performed horribly during the keynote, and iPhone owners in the U.S. regularly cite network performance as the thing they like least about their phone.

What happened to background processes with software 3.0? I found a free, web-based SMS app to go with the €1/day unlimited internet, but thought with the new software I could have that run in the background so I didn't have to check... Same goes for their TomTom app, etc...

While its all very cool, to have the ability to honk the horn on your zipcar, my iPhone is used to text, put things in my iCal, listen to the iPod and go on facebook. Not play first person RPGs while buying stocks, finding my car and sending 200 emails.

It is funny that it will save every SMS you've ever sent, but can't keep your emails...

Unfortunately, it appears that iPhone users in the United States will be waiting longer for MMS than some other areas. Forstall noted that while iPhone OS 3.0 is capable of MMS, it requires carrier support to implement. iPhone 3.0’s tethering works over USB or Bluetooth, and works on Mac OS X and Windows. But in another slight to AT&T, Apple listed dozens of carriers that will support this feature, and AT&T was notably absent from the list.

My 3G already does most of these new features, MMS, Tethering, video camera etc.... I can even watch LIVE TV, Jailbreak your Iphone and Cydia will be your friend

You still on the AT&T network or are you using another cell phone provider?

I'm on T-mobile but it doesn't matter. You just jailbreak your Iphone which mean you can install hundreds of apps available on Cydia that Apple doesn't allow. If you decide to unlock it then you can switch provider. I have many friends with ATT with jailbroken Iphone so that they can install all these Apps.
Clippy is a good C&P program for the jailbroken peeps.

I know about the Jailbreak thing.
My issue is with a cell phone provider
not providing what is required in order
for a customer to use everything a device
is capable of doing.

If AT&T is not capable of providing the infrastructure
needed to support the iPhone then I believe Apple
ought to kick AT&T to the curb and add another
provider that will step up.

It's called France 24 which is like the french CNN, 24 hours news channel in English, French and Arabic. Love it.
You need to be on 2.2.1 though but since you're on the 1st gen, no worries about baseband updates.
