I guess if I can't find a panasonic plasma in 1080p I'd might choose the 720p 50" panasonic over the 50" samsung 1080p plasma? Is the reliability that different? Maybe I'll bring my printed paperwork with me and let the saleman be a salesman and try to get me into a "better deal"... maybe I can find a good quality 50"1080p plasma for under $1k.

If you can get it locally for the same price as online that's the best deal.
I was reading reviews today on 720p vs 1080p and here is what you have to consider: 1) What signal will be provided to the TV? 720p or 1080i or 1080p? 2) If it's not getting a 1080p signal, then don't bother getting a 1080p set. Newer sets will upconvert 1080i to 1080p but I *think* it depends on your set top box signal, but again, does it matter? 3) 50" is the size where the resolution of 1080p starts to be more visible over 720p. (according to the reviews i read) 4) Are you going to hook a blu-ray player to it? if so, then you might want 1080p, if not, then don't bother. 5) You're going to have this tv for potentially a long time, you might want to get 1080p for future-protection and technology creep.
