New TV thoughts?
First I will say that I like the picture quality of plasma better than LCD, and I have a 1080i projector for my few HD needs, like playing PS3 games and bluerays on a 102" diagonal screen on the wall... I just can't afford to continue watching it as my daily TV as it goes through a bulb a year that way, and at $360 a bulb it gets expensive... This will be for watching my standard definition basic cable, which plasma does much better/smoother than even 120hz and 240hz lcd's as basic cable is broadcast in 60hz anyways and the "600hz" plasma makes it look smooth as silk with the 10 pulses per framerate. Please let me know of any personal experience with any of these models and/or any opinions/thoughts. #1: A 720p Samsung unit that was listed on this site for $749 yesterday (which luckily I printed for pricematching reasons as the price is higher today) Samsung PN50B450 50" High-definition Plasma TV |BuyDig.com #2: A 1080p Samsung unit that is listed at $790.64 (also printed out) samsung pn50b530 50 plasma tv - 50 - atsc, ntsc - 16:9 - 1920 x 108 Lowest Price #3: And a 720p Panasonic unit that is only $670 (also printed out) Panasonic TC-P50X1 50" VIERA High-definition 720p Plasma TV - TCP50X1 - TCP50X1 I'll try to get the one decided on through the local best buy if they have no problem pricematching it. (which they shouldn't) I'm kinda leaning towards #2 just because it's 1080i, but as I said the resolution doesn't really matter that much in my case and I'd rather get a different one if it is better quality otherwise...

When it comes to plasmas, I always lean towards Panasonic. I like the picture the best, and for me, the reliability has been excellent.

I would only get a 1080p 120h LED LCD...and my preference is Sony have the LED XBR and it is great.

Not looking to spend the money on the 120hz LED sony, and like the picture better on the plasma anyways. I guess I will look into more options from panasonic, see if they have a 1080p plasma for a decent price...

Check JR.com and Bhphotovideo.com. They are both highly respected and reliable electronics stores in NYC (I ordered the LCD that I bought today from J&R). J&R will also price match and give you free shipping.

Yeah, but I'm looking to get it locally when it is all said and done, and those stores don't exist down here. I guess I'm just looking for the best product in that size range for ~$800... And the reviews mat be better for the panasonics as well. For my useage 720p will suffice, but 1080p would sure be nice! I guess if I can't find a panasonic plasma in 1080p I'd might choose the 720p 50" panasonic over the 50" samsung 1080p plasma? Is the reliability that different? Maybe I'll bring my printed paperwork with me and let the saleman be a salesman and try to get me into a "better deal"... maybe I can find a good quality 50"1080p plasma for under $1k.

If you can get it locally for the same price as online that's the best deal.
I was reading reviews today on 720p vs 1080p and here is what you have to consider: 1) What signal will be provided to the TV? 720p or 1080i or 1080p? 2) If it's not getting a 1080p signal, then don't bother getting a 1080p set. Newer sets will upconvert 1080i to 1080p but I *think* it depends on your set top box signal, but again, does it matter? 3) 50" is the size where the resolution of 1080p starts to be more visible over 720p. (according to the reviews i read) 4) Are you going to hook a blu-ray player to it? if so, then you might want 1080p, if not, then don't bother. 5) You're going to have this tv for potentially a long time, you might want to get 1080p for future-protection and technology creep.

As I said, I have a 1080i projector hitting the wall at 102" with all the goodies hooked to it, and the tv will be primarily for standard definition 480i/p signal. I may hook the iMac and PS3 up to the TV as well, but they are already hooked to the projector and surround sound. I guess for bang for the buck and practicality the 50" panasonic for under $700 is the best deal, and that is something the local best buy will have and do price matching on... Just out of curiosity, what are the reliability issues with the samsungs? I always thought they were some of the better units?
