Looks like the ricer crowd is here...
Don't want to call it ‘kraut’, someone might get confused or offended.

To the person who had posted an objection to my post, then deleted it...
Sorry you were so offended by a term that has become part of standard American English slang. I did not create the term "rice" and I don't find it offensive at all.

I deleted my post because I didn't want to get into a pissing match about ricers or krauts on this website. I still don't.
I was not offended. It just seemed like it might become a racist discussion... That's all. Cheers. |

I see the "ricer" cars as small light imports with enthusiest followings that like to heavily modify them for racing and/or car shows. BMW 3 series cars are the closest I can think of, especially a couple models old (like in most ricers) like the E36.
My old E36 325is had aftermarket headlights, tail lights, rims, exhaust, chip, flywheel/clutch, etc. All the same type of parts kids buy for their honda civics from ebay. The main reason the euro parts looked better on the E36 than on JDM cars is because the E36 is an actual euro car, so styles match better. I would consider the compact models from most manufacturers eligable tuner cars, like the ford foccus, VW jettas and rabbits, mitsubishi galant (evo series), audi a4, etc. Just takes enthusiest to start modifying them and creating that subculture.

This topic has come up on the JukeBox before, sometimes couched in other terms.
Imo, and many here would agree, the population of used/very used Xs in the mkt allows for buyers to "dip in" at price levels well below the oe prices. Thus, the "how do I check my oil" to "do these 24 inchers look good" ratio increases by the year. None of that is wrong or not cool or incorrect, (though the basic & inane questions drive many of us crazy). Not trying to interpret the OP's post, but a lot of Xs are being bought used, by the non-Buffy&Biff crowd or, the BMW "purists" group, (whatever that means), imo. GL, mD

Back in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s, the term “Rice Burner" was used to refer to a Japanese produced sports car. Namely, the Datsun Z’s, RX7’s and Celica/Supra’s. The term was never thought of in my circle as an insult to Japanese people, but an insult from American (cubic inch) fans to underpowered Japanese cars. As time passed, the Japanese cars that were already known as competent road course cars started adding more and more power until they were the dominant sports cars.
Once Japanese cars became the dominant sports cars, the term “Rice Burner” could no longer be used as an insult because these little engine cars were kicking American car tail – not only up and down the quarter mile, but especially embarrassing them on the road (course). At this time, the term “Ricer” started to mutate into a disparagement of people who add junk to their cars that does nothing to add any performance at all, just to make it look bad-ass. Then of course, that became any car that added any non-performance parts at all. Now that same thing is starting to happen here; we are seeing people who are adding ‘neon lights’, overweight wheels, and other junk to the X5. So, my question was, is there any ‘food’ based term that would be analogous? I mentioned ‘kraut’ as a non-suggestion for a name because that actually does have a negative connotation toward people of German ancestry. I guess some people will take my original post as an attempt to insult Japanese or German people. I see it as a question of whether or not there is a food term that would fit. Tongue and cheek wise. I sometimes think people go too far with PC stuff, but generally let it slide, this however just seems silly to me to see this as an implied insult, but I guess we all have our views.

blktoptrvl,
I understood your term, and didn't find it offensive. Screw the PC stuff, imo. There have always been some serious modders on here, and this board's former iteration(s) and gene pool... |

Tuner - performance-oriented modifications. Forced induction, nitrous, reflashes.
Modder - "tasteful" non-performance oriented mods. Body kits, ride height, audio, etc. Ricer - tasteless non-performance mods. Fart cans, Home Depot lip kits, crappy body kits, stick-on air scoops, massive wings on FWD cars. Oh, and the 22" and larger wheels - that's the "donk" crowd. ![]() That's my '05 Tiburon 2.7 V6 with a supercharger, intercooler, cold-air intake, and countless other performance mods. By the time I decided to move on to my Boxster, it was making roughly 2x WHP over stock. Not rice.
