I think they should treat texting while driving as drunk driving in a sense... If the cop see's a car driving erratically/wandering etc. pull it over. It is easy to check for alcohol on breath, and just as easy to ask for their cell phone to see when the last text was sent with most modern smartphones as it labels the time sent by each message. The cop can then deduce if they were indeed texting while driving.

I remember a young teen girl blowing through a red light at the corner of my street and t-boning a car going through the intersection. I was outside with the neighbors when it happened so we ran down there, the light was still green just turning yellow for the other direction traffic which tells me how long her light was red, so she simply wasn't paying any attention... and that car she hit was the 3rd car through the light. She was in bad shape with a broken leg (no seatbelt either) and ended up sprawled out in the front yard of the house at the corner. The cop asked if she was on the phone, she said no.... the cop picked up her cell phone from the cars dashboard to find her frantic boyfriend on the still on the line asking what happened and was she ok, because he just her her say OH SHIT and heard a crash, then no responses from her but heard sirens and voices in the background! Some people can't even talk while driving safely, even to someone else in the car at times.

Considering how many people call me and the need I have to use a cell
phone in a car to call others I wouldn't miss it one bit so bring it on.
It would be fun just to watch some of these people trying to deal with the addiction...

Maybe you and me should call each other every day or so, on our cell phones, so the suckers ring once in awhile.

If they're trying to be "Proactive" by making it impossible to use a cell phone in any moving car, why not go the extra proactive step and make every car have a breathalyzer ingnition interlock?

Cell phone use while driving is just symptom of the distracted driving desease. The underlying cause is that sense of entitlement coupled with the lack of common sense that we seem to have about everthing these days.

People have stopped thinking about the consequences of their daily actions. Just because technology has made things possible, that doesn't mean that we have to do it.

Perfect example of that is facebook. The wife and I own a large preschool. Most of our employees have facebook pages. Most of our customers have facebook pages. Some are friends of each other. Our employees can't seem to understand why it's inappropriate to be texting in facebook updates during the day. Hmmm, you're supposed to be taking care of someone's child, but instead you're too busy updating facebook, and everyone knows you're not watching their kids because they can see your updates. "Oh, I didn't think about that..." No kidding.

I actually have a very valid reason for being on the phone in the car. I work for an international company and have a 75 minute commute each way. By using BT in the X I can be on calls that start at 7a.m. and 7p.m. and not have to be in the office or stay home for the calls. Sure there are a lot of people who blather about on their cell phones while driving just because they can, but those of us who are in their cars a lot and have a business need it's a huge benefit.

it's too easy to get a license... it should be more difficult. there are alot of people driving that should not be... in addition there should be retests as you get on in years. my grandfather is in his 90's and can still drive well, but there are people that get up in years and lose the touch of driving... it would suck to lose the privilege but if you are unqualified to drive then you are unqualified to drive. or restricted to day driving, or certain road types.

also there are cars that should be off the road as well, or at the very least be banned from highway speeds.

also also, this would increase the use of public transportation, and walking. not enough fit people in this country.

key thing that we're using BT's of some sort vs holding the actual phone.

w/ this as well. I think I've even read a study that says people who are higher up in age have just as bad, if not worse reaction time than those people studied who we're texting, drunk, etc. Driving is a privelege and after say 70, people should be tested just as they were when they were 16yrs old. I'm sure myself and everyone on here has passed that 70yr old granny, sitting 6" away and hugging the steering wheel while doing 40mph on the freeway. My mother is in her 50's and I've told her she needs to simply stay off the freeways because she's a complete f'ing idiot in the rain and that her fear of driving alone will cause other people to get into an accident because she is too scared to drive at speed in the rain...and she lives in Seattle, so sh'e screwed either way!! But we're getting off topic.

Problem is everybody thinks they have a valid reason for being on the phone while driving bluetooth or not.
What they need is a chance to drive behind themselves for a change.
Perhaps then they would have an epiphany realizing what a hazard they really are and
the rest of humanity could stop yelling, "GET OFF THE PHONE YOU IDIOT"
