I had forgot about this video! I first saw it maybe a year ago and thought it was a pretty impressive comparison, and shows how the "economy" cars are worse for the economy before you even start driving them than a normal car after 100k miles.

I can only imagine how bad for the environment the Chevy Volt is, with it being an electric car and all......

Since we all know that ///M badges add horsepower (and massive prestige!) what about a Prius with ///M badges? Or better yet, a M3 with Prius badges?

Great video. Couldn't agree more with the net summary, it's how you drive that really matters.

I'm very biased though, I think hybrids are a bunch of BS. And the Volt which is incorrectly still marketed and called an electric vehicle is also BS. Huge money for something that will NOT be good for the environment with all the old batterys. Feel good is all hybrids are about. I feel better now too.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion, I'm not swayed. The fully electric car was proven from an experiment point of view in, I think the year 1909.

Your argument isn't one for hybrids but rather that there will be no fuel for any combustion engine.

I don't see how hybrids solve this problem. It's clear that one can get a car that gets 40mpg + highway and 30 + in the city without the extra expense of a hybrid. Save the money spent on a hybrid and put it in the bank or buy oil futures.

Electric and hydrogen are two potential power sources of the future. Most people buy hybrids at least partially because they want to look like they are smart and saving the planet. With so many high mileage non hybrid cars available for much less money, what are people really buying?

It's a fine idea for people to spend their money how they see fit, but hybrids are not the answer when we run out of oil.

Are you saying they are?

And to repeat what was said in the beginning of the video, by the time a car like the prius is manufactured and ready for the road it has already done as much damage to the environment as a big gas hungry SUV... I agree that hybrids/electric may be the way of the future, but the technology isn't quite there yet. I think a great hybrid would use a small diesel engine with the electrics built into the transmission (like the X6 active hybrid tranny) that switch from being a massive generator when under engine power to becoming a huge electric motor that can power the vehicle along as long as the battery holds up.

VW even made a concept car (that I would buy 2 of if it came out in the US) that gets 258 mpg on diesel without being a hybrid. It may be smaller than a smart car, but cool nonetheless.

I would use one for driving, and pull the other apart to utilize the engine in a homemade off-road buggy and drop a built up 'busa engine in the body at my friends custom bike shop.
