Hypothetical extended warranty question

Ok - lets say I had a 2006 X5 and purchased an extended warranty that covered me until 100,000 miles. I now have 95,000 miles and inquire about another extended warranty to kick in after the original 100,000 miles. I am given a quote. Shouldn't the new warranty kick in at 100,001 miles and not mileage at the time of purchase?

My dad has a Touareg with 95,000 miles. He inquired about another extended warranty but was told the quote he was given was only good from now and it could not kick in when the original warranty was up. I'm calling BS and the salesguy is looking to take advantage of a 75 year old man.

I told him this and he wants confirmation before he goes back to VW and says if this was a BMW....

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

L,

I'm a little confused by your hypothetical question.
1. BMW does not offer any extended warranty over 100K miles.
2. As far as I know, there is only a one-time extended warranty that you can purchase (which can be 70K miles or 100K etc.). You can't purchase another one top of that (unless it's possibly a non-BMW warranty?).

Problem is, you are thinking it is a warranty (in which case the 100k and 200k intervals make sense) and it is really an insurance policy, taking effect on the day you buy it. If you want it to start at a future date, buy it that day.

As stated above, no BMW plans past 100k.

The way plans start vary based on the plan, and that varies by states.

HOWEVER, and "plan" that will cover beyond 100k is likely pretty shabby and limited. They may sound great with glossy brochures, but take the policy and really understand it, you will find they are poor.

Which, when you think of it, makes perfect sense- afterall, these cars WILL break down- how can anyone offer solid plans that extend coverages to 120k, 150k, etc??? If they truly extended the factory warranty out that far, they'd go belly up-

Thank you Brian, JCL and ard. The warranty vs insurance policy statement makes sense. The salesman is telling him that the quote is only good now and if he waits until just before the 100K mile mark he cannot honor the quote. I was looking at it as a warranty with mileage brackets.

My dad is so damn attached to this car - it's a V10 tdi. He bought it because they wouldn't lease it at the time. He figured it would be his last car as it would run forever . Anyway, for the most part it has been problem free. Until the turbos went at 80K miles. Then the drive shaft went and he was stranded on the side of the road. I'm glad he had my nephews with him. One turbo went again recently. My brother and I are trying to convince him to just trade it in and get another car. He is 75 years old and travels up to PA a lot. I'd feel better knowing he was in a new car. He can't get past the fact that it was a $70K vehicle new and now it's worth maybe $20K.

He's making us crazy as far as what VW should do for him to protect him going forward. We are trying to convince him that after the warranty is up, it doesn't make sense to keep it due to the cost of potential repairs. I'll ask him to find out exactly what the policy covers. Hopefully that will change his mind.

Have a good guys. Thanks again.

My (retired pilot) mom traded her Touareg in with 97K on it for her X5 (that now has 110K on it, and she loves to death). Our Air suspension and A/C had gone out 2-3 times a piece, and we felt like we had gotten away with murder when the BMW dealer took it away from us. The extended warranty company came to audit us every time something broke, since we would have had $40k in repairs without it. It was a great piece of machinery but it's time was up.

What year is his Touareg? He could find a newer V10 TDI, they went through '08 IIRC.

Thanks Dan, I will pass this on. He had the last one that came to the states. Its '06 or '07. They only offer 6 cyl now.
