My $0.02: People have forgotten that he is half Caucasian. Obama has not but the media and public sure have. Does it matter? Not to me. He could be purple polka dots for all I care so long as he does a good job. The assumption that he is "qualified" is just that: an assumption. I think that he is very charismatic, articulate, and has nailed MLK's cadence as well as JFK's smoothness. That made him a very appealing candidate in the face of a crusty and semi-crazy McCain.

Brian Williams on NBC made an interesting observation about Obama being of mixed race and called him a true African-American since Obama's father was from Kenya. How do other African-Americans feel about that? Racist? :poke:
Side bar: I heard Obama today compared to...

Thomas Jefferson
John Adams
Abraham Lincoln
John F. Kennedy
Martin Luther King Jr.

That is a SERIOUSLY high level of comparison for a person who was a junior senator and started their first day on the job. Like comparing a rookie quarterback to Joe Montana, Joe Namath, Dan Marino or Tom Brady. The individuals he was compared to had LIFE LONG dedication to their country and cause. While I do think Obama "could" be great, lets at least make him earn the prolific role call.

You're right on. The guy might, and I hope will, turn out to be one of the greats but from the get go this guy has had an almost unreal amount of almost god-like adoration. He's a rock star more than a politician. People have so blindly thrown their panties at him like never before. Like you pointed out, the media has had to make so many "he's like" statements because he doesn't have a track record or own identity to focus on. It's all been very superficial and in 30 second sound bytes. That seems to be enough for most of America.

The cold and unforgiving examination that the passage of and tests of his mettle will allow will define him and I hope that at the end of it all he has lived up to even half of the hype.

I don't think I'm anti-Obama so much as I'm not in love with him like most people seem to be, like lovesick puppy dogs.

Thanks;

I am genuinely sorry I posted my feelings about what I saw.
I don't know why I thought this thread would turn out
different than it did. It's the same old garbage. Nothing
but negative responses.

It is my sincerest wish that the admins not only lock this thread
but deleted it as well.

I hear you Barry. I'm not a big fan of Obama's but there is an undeniable hopefulness and optimism despite how dire things are right now. Hey, if that hope takes flight and we see our country truly change and move forward then as historic as today felt, it will be a thousand times more historic when viewed after the benefit of hindsight.

Finally heard his entire speech. It was impressive. His comments on civil liberties/responsiblities was uplifting. Quoting Washington was marvelous. While the tasks at hand are different, he appears to get the big picture.

We need somebody who gets the big picture. This could be his most powerful asset.

Hope is not a management style, but it gives us something to believe in.

The site is over-moderated as it is. There is no need to delete it. Unless it turns to personal attacks, it will remain open.

I get your point, and you made it well.

I can't pretend to fully understand your experience or perspective, but I can appreciate the gravity of the moment. I can try to understand, but can't fully.

Tomorrow, though - back to politics as usual.
