Gee, I hope it's not common... otherwise, something else for me to look forward too.
Talk to Cliff at PartAgents. He can get OEM anything for our BMW's. BMW Spare Parts Australia | BMW e30, e46, 318i car parts | Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, all Australia |. His number is on that page. Rob |

It was starting to wobble on my 4.8is as well. I realized the rubber was delaminating just like the Mercedes ones. But when the Benz ones go, they take out everything.
Yea so OEM is Febi. See if Febi supplies the one for your model as well. It was literally half price from OE, but is identical when compared side by side, including the numbers.

Harmonic Balancer
Mine just let go as well, what a mess, on the tilt tray to get it home. When I ordered a new one I was told that it was the second one for the week. My 2004 3.0D with 140K on it is always in the heat so probably helped the failure. I also replaced the power steering hoses, both belts and three tension pulleys so I don't get caught again.
If you have a few K on your X5 suggest you have a look at the condition of the rubber. Spanners in Hand |

Thanks guys, problem solved, Cliff at PartAgents supplied me a new pulley, he is a pleasure to deal with. My car only had 108K on the clock when it let go, tell tail sign was heavy steering and poor A/C cooling (condenser fan was U/S too)
I replaced both belts at the same time, got them from Repco, the local dealer did not have them in stock would you believe? Man, what a job to replace the air con consenser fan assy though! The pulley was easy to C/O. Still I know a lot more about my X5 now. TW |

I did the Condensor fan about 6 months ago.. It is much more difficult that the non diesel versions, like 10 extra steps.. took me 4 hours to get to it, about 30 minutes to put everything back. You certainly do learn alot about the X5 when you do your own jobs.

My harmonic balancer also failed today, at just under 200,000km.
Indications: Burning rubber smell, alternator/battery light ON and power steering very heavy. To limp home, I reduced the load on the failing harmonic balancer by deselecting the air-con, turning off any lights and any other non essential electrical loads. Had to be careful of the engine temperature though, as the waterpump is also driven from the same source. Cheers, Colin. |

My harmonic balancer failed today at 200,000 kms. Bad rubber burning smell, battery light on and off and then on again , heavy power steering and poor AC performance. Really easy to remove will replace belts and idler pulleys while in there.
Just looking for a quick replacement now . |

Common failure yes.
Apparently from about 140k's these should be kept an eye on. Mine failed last year at 210k. Again Cliff at Parts Agent awesome to deal with.Bought all the gear from him, also did both rad hoses and water pump while there. Cost approx $850 -$900 shipped to WA. Better than the $1550 i got quoted oem for just the balancer. My dad also has one 06 with 160k, did his at the same time, with was starting to perish. I would advise (from a BMW enthusiasts point of view also as a mechanic myself) anyone with a diesel X to look at doing this as a preventative maintenance item. |
