Highly recommend the Arnotts and replace in pairs. The rears are easy to change out. I have been running Arnotts on all 4 corners for 4 years.

I recommend changing before BMW's recommended intervals. I think it is possible for the oil to last that long. However, the times I have tried it, the oil filter is nearly disintegrated.

The problem was that the nuts that hold the strut on the top were loose. It produced a creaking noise. I know this thunking noise that you are talking about. It definitely wasn't a thunking noise....
