Not trying to simplify your ordeal but since the vehicle is certified, why don't you keep driving it, properly service it, and if/when something major happens to the engine, have it fixed under CPO?

Go to the service department and they will read the key. Chances are that if you bought it off Ebay or the like it belongs to another vehicle. Hence why it won't start your X5.

No biggie, just go to the dealer with proof of ownership and order a new one. Here in the US it is about $165+tax and you get it in 3 days or so.
