HIDs do produce heat but so do the original 35W Halogens lamps. Whether there is a substantial difference between the two might be worth checking. Anyone who has them fitted able to check?

The ECU, doesn't deal with the lighting circuit the LCM or light control module does. It is very similar on all the E53, E83, E39, E43 & >'96 E38s it will detect blown lamps and over current/wattage...

You should only need one relay if you are going...

You should only need one relay if you are going to link in to the park lights and the entry lights.
The connections should be:
Relay COM to ballasts,
relay N/O to BAT,
relay N/C to park light...
