I am currently working on the rear left bearing on my X5, and you are correct the bolts are impossible to access, you have to remove the exhaust, the axle, and the bolts are like you said impossible...

I have mine replace at the local dealer, I paid $1200.00, they replace all the rubber around the windshield, and did a water leak test , the kept the X5 for a week, but they gave a nice 335 for that...
