I've driven my E53 down to the point of lean misfire several times, just over 20 miles after the DTE displays "0".
I'm still on the OE pump (over 200k miles), even running the DTE below 10...

I would bet that most vehicles over 10 yrs old, that have not seen regular lube maintenance (ALL body/accessory friction points, lubed every spring/fall), will need new wiper links & shaft bushings...

I fixed the leak issue by removing the factory clamps, cutting the clamp deformed hose ends and installing aircraft spec worm groove clamps.
