Check the remote on voltage with a multimeter. Consider wiring the remote on to a permanent 12V as a test.

The pairing button shorts to ground one of the wires in the eject box. I think it's a green wire on pin 1 or 2. You could Google for the pairing button DIYs to see which are the active pins.
