I hot drain the oil for around 10 mins, add a clean Qt of oil (to "push" the used oil out of the pan), then let it sit overnight.

Dealer sourced filters ONLY!

I think drastic temp changes causes the cracking (cold winters/hot summers/non-garaged), and/or pushing on the door trim during opening.
