If i have to guess I think it is a loose or corroded ground cable. If a voltage regulator or bad alternator the battery would be dead and the car won't restart.

I tow all the time

I have 03 x5 3.0, I have towed an 19 foot open trailer with 5 dirt bikes on it with no problems at speeds of 60 to 65 mph and still got 17 miles to the gallon.
