I think they started designing the X6 back in the early or mid 2000s when gas was cheap and everyone wanted SUVs and by the time the car came to market, the market went poof and it was too late. Might as well try to sell it. This being a niche board, I'm not surprised that there are many of you who are fans of the X cars (obviously right). But look outside your circles of influence and see how bad its is out there. Sure, BMW will sell some X5Ms and X6Ms. But I bet they will D/C the X6 in 4 yrs due to poor sales.
We can debate this till we're blue, but only time will tell what will happen.

Without taking sides, wanted to make an objective observation. X6 has been out for almost a year. I happen to drive around every day in somewhat upscale parts of NJ and NY. And I have seen quite a few E70s on the road, both the 3.0i and the 4.8i, not to mention huge amounts of 328s and 335s. But I have seen a whopping total of maybe 3 E71s on the road. 3 !!
So if they are selling well, they must be getting shipped to like Fargo, ND or something, because around here I'm just not seeing them in the largest metro area in the United States.:dunno:.
One also has to question the wisdom of pricing a base X6 35i higher than a fully-optioned X5 3.0, or a base X6 50i much higher than a X5 4.8i. Seems like you're getting more bang for buck going to a parallel E70 (i.e. from a 35i to a 3.0 or from a 50i to a 4.8). More utility, more cargo space, better rear visibility...straight-line performance is certainly worse in the "parallel" E70, but I still don't think it's enough to vindicate the starting price point of an E71.
