My self appointed title is "Technologist"... My friend and I have a company that performs a wide range of B2B (Business to Business) services to small to mid-size companies across the country. I manage the Information Technologies side of the business, so effectively I'm a computer nerd. The hardest thing I do all day is that LLoooonnnnngggg reach for the F7 key (jk).

I agree with several of the other comments regarding enjoying your job. I wake up in the morning and I "get" to go to work... I don't "have" to go to work. I get to play with a bunch of really cool stuff I couldn't afford to have at home, and I get to help people. It's awesome.

Lots of guys here in IT. My first job out of HS was at a small computer shop doing networking runs, system builds, and sales. LOL $6.75/hr at that time wasn't too bad.

Still into the "nerdy" stuff, run a decent size home network by most people's standards. 7 machines, switch, router, NAS box, and about 22 drops of cat5e throughout the house. That was fun let me tell you... I have a crawl only attic. :)

Retired from the military after 25 years. I was living the life for 9 months (eating, drinking and sleep) after retirement, but they called me and asked me if wanted to teach JROTC at a High school. Since I was going crazy after 9 months of stay at home, I gave a try. I have been doing it for two years now and the money is not that bad!

A lot has to do with having "the knack"

From a young age - I discovered this gift. Tearing apart VCRs when I was 8. Built my first white box PC at 12. A 386DX40, sweet. My folks told me about it, and that I absolutely had it... and as such, I eventually found myself working in the technology field before I was even out of HS. An education in Engineering was obvious for me.

Not just IT guys, but many other professions require "the knack" and we just seem to gravitate to these cars. They're marvels of Technology and German Engineering. I bought my E39 and then recently my E53 knowing full well that I was going to tear them apart to see what makes them tick, how I can improve things and modify them to my liking.

"What do I do for a living?" Self employed boiler service. Do you know what that means? I have to get back to work, 10 unemployed families are counting on me to work 80 hours a week. I work 1/2 days. 6am to 6pm.

Fully agree with the above. My first computer was a hand-me-down 386, and then had a 486. Took both apart to install faster modems and game/sound cards of course. Can you say Comanche, Captain Keen, Battle Chess, and Dos? First computer I got to call my own was a Packard Bell Pentium 60!!! LOL dat speed... and Windows for Workgroups 3.11! Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing, Mechwarrior, Earthsiege, Doom, Duke Nukem, Diablo, etc.

Ahhhh dems were the days.:D
