Did the Navy thing for a bit, then 10 years in defense contracting. Switched it up 2.5 years ago to try utility electrical engineering. Love it but got an offer I couldn't pass up. Going back to defense systems electronics engineering in a month or so.

Retired from fortune 500 company. No more 60 hour weeks, no more quarterly budget reviews, no more staff meetings, no more politics, no more back stabbers, no more international travel to places that I have no idea what I am eating-----and I escaped with most of my soul.

Pretty much the same thing here. I work for an insurance company in our "EA" area as a technology architect. Mostly datacenter technologies for me! I've been doing corporate IT stuff since 1997.

Early in my career it was UNIX sysadmin - lately it's a lot of managing our "managed services providers" outputs.

Believe it or not I am Civil Engineer (followed the traditional engineering path of my family) on papers but turned out to be IT which I really liked to do in the 1st place / pays the bill maybe the same way traditional architects gets (or more).

To your comment about the traditional ways versus now.. it is the same thinking that Bill Gates said the world only needs 64kb of memory - its more than enough....

Welcome to the digital world.
