When buying BMW OEM warranties, it extends your factory warranty from 4 years up to 6 years and increases the max mileage to 100K.

For my 2004 4.4 X5 with 35K on it (OEM warranty to expired 1/31/2008) I bought a 5 year 100K warranty with $100 deductible for $3365 (car needs to be in the factory warranty I believe for this pricing).

That price is if you pay for it all at once. It's the bumper to bumper "OEM" plan (as they call it). You can use it at your BMW dealer or independent as long as they take a 3rd party credit card. Warranty Direct and others are owned by this company and I think it deserves a good look.

Did some searching on this before and I found that the cheapest place for the extended maintenance plan was always TwinKidneyGrill.com - currently quoting $1645 for maintenance.

FWIW, they are also quoting OOP for $3875 for 2yr/50K

I contacted Justin of BMW of Macon, and he said you do not have to be the original owner to get the 2 year 100,000 mile extended warranty; however now you need to mail in the key to them as people took advantage of the program over the phone. For example, someone would buy the warranty over the phone and say they had under 50,000 miles and show up the next week with over 50,000 miles. On an aside, BMW does over a extended maintenance package which is more expensive to the original owner which basically is the same as the original 4 yr 50000.

The pricing is $100 over cost($1495) for the X5, which then totals $1,595.

Any risk that your local dealer with use inferior parts, take short-cuts, etc. if the warranty is not purchased from them?

Nope. They still get paid from BMW.

Every dealer I've ever talked to has said otherwise (that you must be the original owner to get BMW's extended warranty). Wonder how we could double-check that.

You get the extended warranty (6yr/100k) if you buy a certified pre-owned vehicle. Not sure about buying one outside of a dealer though...
