My X had been sitting in the garage for couple of weeks, this morning I discovered that the rear suspension was about 2-1/2 inches lower that the front. As I opened the drivers side door the air pump kicked on and the rear height went back up to normal. I've been monitoring it to see if it drops again. Does this mean I have a leaky rear air bag? I have an 02 4.4i with 87,000 miles. Is it time to replace both air bags?

they probably supplied you with a used air bag passed off as new. indy that claims warranty from bmw PI/ACC? san yan? anyway what will happen to the other parts you replaced but turned out wasn't defective? |
I just checked with Arnott Inc. for the Rear Air Suspension Air Springs for 2000-2006 BMW X5 and they said they do not carry them. The only choice left is the stealer or a salvage yard. Does anyone know of another source?
UPDATE: I just found two online sources for the airbags and they sell brand new OEM for $181 shipped. 2005 BMW :: X5 4.4i N62 (E53 chassis) - Suspension, Steering System - Suspension Air Bag Parts And Accessories Catalog - KO Performance Pelican Parts - Product Information: 37121095579-M9 |
try checking your brakes.....my x5 3.0d 2005 recently had the suspension warning come on...there was no difference in ride or height, but my ride height adjustment button woulnd't work...it was followed a few days later by the brake lights coming on....
Had the break pads and discs changed and the suspension warning has gone away too and my ride height adjustment button is working too.... not sure what the connection is ..... |
Those are non-connected systems, just coincidence that the air suspension didn't act up yet since the brake maintenance... The air suspension inactive message is usually intermittent when it is a funky relay contact.

Just wanna conclude my rear air suspension problem. Problem solved. My indie shop found out that the replacement airbag was defective. They installed a new one and my X has been sitting in the garage for 3 nights now without any sagging problem..YEHEY !!!!!!!

I'm having a similar problem, without the message light. Rear end squatted and wife drove it and it cut the inside of the tires.(ouch) I've checked both fuses 7.5 and 30 amp and also there is a relay inside the airpump housing, all checked out. I jumpered a paper clip after I removed the relay and pump came on.( so i know pump is good). I jacked up rear end and cleaned right rear sensor and put back together and started X5, everything came on and leveled out. All was well, or so I thought, next morning rear end squatting. I ordered new leveling sensors from ECS tuning.com, only problem was backordered, so I had to go to the dealer.(extra 20 bucks) They will be in this Monday and i'll install them on Wednesday, hope it works or next step will be leveling computer. Thanks for all the great info on this subject.

I finally got my Arnott front left air strut last Wednesday. I hope the shipping all the way here didn't do damage. Packaging is very good though. Will have my mechanic install it this week. Anything I should watch out for?
Thanks! |
