I would sure like to know also if it applies to the 4.8 as it would be cheaper than having to get the DINAN s/w.

answers (some at least)

Some answers to the above questions.

1) This transmission software is specific to the 4.4i "valvetronic" engines (first released for MY 2004). Apparently they struggled with different updates to the software, and only recently "got it right";

2) The software fixed two "known issues" that I'm aware of
a) "smoothed" acceleration from a stop, in my case virtually eliminating the hesitation that many experienced (including me) with the "new" 4.4's

b) fixed the "sudden clunk" that commonly happened when acellerating on a steep incline, especially if one had released the accellerator and then re-accellerated (if that makes any sense).

3) The software was installed/updated at no charge under warranty

I will check on my service receipt to see if they have a software version # denoted.

Trust me, it's worth it!

mfrymier - any more info on this? Will you call your dealer for us and let us know exactly what to ask for? Pretty please? TIA!

I'm going in for service Wednesday (my birthday yay) and I'm gonna ask for this. This will be the best birthday present if it is really effective like you guys say.

any update on this?

i complained about hesitation at about 1900-2600 rpm 90km-110km...they did an update of egine programming or something, and nothing changed, so i have an nappointment to take a guy for a drive from bmw tomm. to show him the hesitation....they also cannot seem to fix my folding mirrors, replaced stuff, been there 3x..but still dont wrk properly., they are alsom waiting to hear back from bmw about painting, as my front bumper effect is loose, so they replaced it but it needs to be painted, also clear coat coming off on the side/inside of my hood along the paint line. So bmw here is waiting to hear back from bmw on those issues and eginerring re; my mirrors.

WOW. Big change. Definitely feel the difference. Brought the X to the dealership for an oil change and tranny software update at 16k miles. No more hesistation at all. Seems the car just got reenergized with the new oil, it's running so much better and smoother now. :thumbup: :D

Definitely worth the time having it brought in. Plus they offered me a free car wash too. And the best part is they gave me an x3 loaner with 58 miles!!!! :wow: Literally brand new. Although it was a 2.5 litre, it had quite of a punch for a small engine. I must say, although I don't like the outside looks of the x3, it runs like a great bimmer should be. Still, it's a far cry from the X5. Glad it was fixed in a day

Service was for free and definitely worth it. Everyone else who's experiencing this problem should bring it to the stealer. The service administrator somehow knew what I was talking about (since he had an x5 too) and got the problem solved quickly. :thumbup: Hope things turn out the same for you guys when you have your x's brought in.

Sorry about the delay guys

I'm still trying to track down a "software version" for the tranny software. My wife is convinced I somehow bought a whole new car the thing is so much better.....I'm supposed to go back in this week and will try to get the version ##.
