And I don't quite get how DIS reads voltage because there is no direct power connection to the head. In the GT1 manual, it must refer to the battery voltage of the GT1 unit. Does that mean it measures the voltage of the laptop in our setup? I have connected my laptop to the power outlet so thought it won't cause the voltage problem..

I think that later models may not have an OBD port under the hood or the pin layout might be different than the older one like mine. Anyway, it worked for me. Great!

However, the problem with my 330ci persists. I am pretty sure it does not have a second OBD port inside the engine room (need to do some research), so it may not be easy to troubleshoot it without expert's inputs from you guys.

If you have the round 20-pin connector under the hood you have to use that one. So for the early year X5s you will be hooking up under the hood. It should be near the firewall on the passengers side.

I was going to suggest the exact thing. As I understand it, the round connector is a BMW proprietary connector. So, for later models BMW went with the standard OBD connector.

Obviously, all my DIY are for facelift models but maybe you can help out now. Can you take pics of the location in the engine compartment and of the actual connection then post or send it to me. Then we can add it to the first post. I'm going to add the pics I have of how to connect the cables so that would help.

On the 330ci .. what year is it?

I'd give it a try! Just go through the programming button on the main start page instead of clicking diagnosis, click zcs coding (I think that's what they call is, been a while since I used that software) Select encoding, select DME, and follow the instructions. It is pretty easy, and the encoding goes real quick. You should be able to figure it out easily! Then go back into diagnosis and the fault should be not present and able to clear on the first try. And a hint to save time, don't do a full short test, just click on DME and short test that module individually, then clear fault memory through control module functions. Easy as 1-2-pie! :thumbup:

My 330ci is 2001 (2001/05 build). I will go over the document and report the progresses. One thing that I realized is that I have to put the gear in neutral (I am 5 speed) before running DIS. Hopefully that unlocks the mystery.
