I checked today and I do have the small exhaust pipe under the car, so I also definitely have the heater and just need to enable its control. I realise that £390 isn't just the actual remote, but it's a simple remote system add-on and as such it's a steep price and now I know it's possible, I cannot deny myself:-) |
X5 3.0D 2004
The remote installed in this car is the Webasto Telestart T70. If I would have to buy a new remote I would go for the T100. Just over 300 euros on eBay. |

If the car is pre-wired for a remote it's easy.
Kind of plug&play. Believe Adrian.B did the install himself. Still, you would probably have the X connected to a BMW computer to tell the system that it has aux heating installed. That's in case you don't have the aux heating option on your screen . The cheaper T70 remote control is one-way so you'll never sure whether the heater was activated. Others, like the HTM100 are 2-way. This HTM100 will even show you the interiors temperature! |
My question was directed at the HTM100 install. The T70 will plug strsight in as adrian.b has described, it is after all the BMW part. But what about the HTM100? Neither this nor the X5 were designed to work together, how would they connect, or would it genuinely be as straightforward as for the T70?

On a German Webasto page they say: "Alle Bedienelemente können miteinander kombiniert und aufgerüstet werden".
To me this looks as if all remotes are interchangeable. The T80 and T91 are also 2-way remotes (reporting back), the T70 is not. Another link. On this realoem.com link you can see that BMW uses the T90 and the T100. If you don't have the aux heater option in your menu be carefull, I do believe you need an electric waterpump to use it when the car is parked. If the heater is installed without the pump it will just fire up if you start the car and the oat is below a certain value (like 7 degrees). It would just help to heat up the coolant quicker as otherwise it might take a while before it feels cosey inside. It's a very efficient diesel engine  |
Conflicting information as always:-(
Those links are really interesting Eric as I received a reply from Webasto stating that the HTM100 CANNOT be used with my X5 (maybe BMWs in general) as they are programmed to only heat for 30 minues and then stop, whereas the HtM100 would try to keep going until the selected temperature was reached. I can see his point, but I wouldn't have thought that precluded any possibility of using the HTM100. I will tackle him further about this. However, your mention of the water pump raises another question, similar to the point raised by my dealer when I requested they 'enable' the heating feature on the car computer. They said it would heat the water, but not heat the car. A question for adrian.b. (sorry, but you're the main source right now as you've done the upgrade). If you set the timer for Aux. heating, does it actually operate the fan, so the car is warmed inside, or does it just mean the water is heated so you can immediately use the fan when you get in? Presumably the situation is the same when using the remote? My dealer will 'enable' the heating system today, so i guess I'll find out, but they are charging to do it . No question that BMW would cover it, even when I pointed out that they had done so in the past for other cars. But I'm not going to argue as in fairness, those cars were probably still in warrantly and in any case right now I need all of BMW UK's goodwill for my more expensive steering column adj. problem. I guess the big question is, has anyone fited an HTM100 to an X5? |
Hello
Strangely I have only just found this thread which is odd considering how much research I have done on the matter of the auxiliary/parking heater recently.... Anyway, I have become (not really by choice) quite an expert on these heaters. I have a 2002 X5 3.0D which came with the Webasto Thermotop diesel auxiliary heater as standard (I say Auxiliary because BMW use this term to describe the heater when it is fitted as standard and only comes on when the car is started and the outside temperature is below +6 and coolant is below +60 celcius - I think this heater was fitted to all UK/EU 3.0D's). I decided to upgrade the heater to a parking heater (which is the term BMW use when the car has been programmed to turn on the standard heater from the Bordmonitor or via the optional remote - T60 before 2001/T70 after 2001). My dealer sold me an upgrade kit for the coolant water piping which is a bypass operated by a solenoid valve and controlled by the cars heater/fan/AC control unit. This bypass became standard in 2003 because the car will only allow the heater (whether aux. or parking) to run for 30 minutes and in extreme low temperatures they found that 30 minutes was not enough to warm the engine block and the cabin. The bypass only allows coolant to flow though the diesel heater and the cars cabin heating circuit. I bought the remote control (T70) antenna and tranceiver unit off Ebay. I fitted the whole lot and then took the car to the dealer to have it programmed. They promptly discovered that my diesel heater was faulty and probably hadn't worked for some time. I then bought a replacement heater off Ebay, fitted it, confirmed on a cold morning that it was working correctly as an auxiliary heater and went back to the dealer. However....they still cannot get it to work as a parking heater. When the heater is activated from the Bordmonitor or from the remote it starts and runs for about a minute and then shuts down. I have had a long conversation with Paul at Webasto and exchanged a few emails and he is convinced the problem is not with the heater as he feels the heater is doing what it is supposed to, and the problem is with the heater/AC contoller in the car. The start procedure for the heater when activated as a parking heater is as follows: 1. The heater receives a start signal from bordmonitor or remote. 2. It starts up and does an internal check, a check to see if its fuel pump is working and if the water circulation pump (for the coolant) is working. 3. If all is good it requests a run 'permission' from the cars heater/AC controller. 4. Cars heater/AC controller then checks battery voltage and fuel level and if both are OK it turns on the fans inside the car, and sends a run 'confirmation' to the heater and the heater runs for the next 30 minutes. 5. The heater will try this 'permission' request up to three times. I think my problem is that the heater is not receiving the run 'confirmation' from the car and after 3 tries goes into shutdown. I apologize for the long post but would really appreciate any advice. We've had quite a mild winter here in Holland this year and probably won't need the parking heater, so it's more about solving the problem now....lol |
I have now had my ('04) X5 3.0d 're-programmed' by the dealer and although previously the screen only offered 'Aux Ventilation', it now displays 'Aux Heating/Ventilation' (maybe words a bit shortened). However, it's not been very cold since then and not actually used it. I must check it out.
Scaramouche, I assume the dealer programed your car like mine so it now offers the Heating option? Was their attempt maybe incomplete so it's not been fully set to use the heating? I've not yet got to the bottom of whether the HTM100 could be made to work. Has anyone got one of these working with the X5? |
UKenGB,
The dealer insists that they programmed my car correctly and when my car came back from being re-programmed the Bordmonitor screen option now shows aux. heating/ventilation as yours now does. In that menu you should now have 2 timer settings, a direct mode for ventilation and a new direct mode for heating. Choosing direct heating mode will turn the parking heater on immediately (and the fan inside the car) or you can set the time using the timers and the parking heater and interior fan will come on at that set time. All that seems to work on my car and either method will initiate a startup of the parking heater....but it then goes into it's shutdown cycle after 30secs to a minute. I would really appreciate if you can check if yours does work and if it does, I would be very greatfull if you could possibly pop the heater/AC control out of your dash (if you stick a blunt butter knife in next to it, it will come out very easily with no risk of damage) and let me know the BMW part number on it. After looking at the ETK, it seems that there are different part numbers for these units if you have the parking heater fitted. I'm thinking this might be my problem. Hey, I'll grasp at any straw.... I did put the issue of the heater/AC contol part numbers to the dealer and they consulted BMW Holland and both admit that it could be the problem but are not sure. A somewhat dissapointing response... As for your concerns about the circulating water pump in your car, I'm fairly sure you would have it - the pumps seem to have been fitted as standard to all the UK/EU 3.0D's. It's mounted low down on the left front of the car, next to the radiator reservoir. If you don't have it, you will not be able to use the diesel heater as a parking heater because without water circulating through the heater, it will shut down due to over-temperature. Actually it won't even start as the heater looks for the pump before starting. With the T100, I'm fairly sure it will work as Eric Le Baron has shown it is included in the ETK. However, I don't know if you will have all it's functionality. There is only a single wire that leads from the remote tranceiver unit to the heater and all that the heater is capable of doing is receiving the 12 volt signal that is sent down that wire when you push the button on the remote. I don't believe there is any feedback from the heater to the tranceiver. I don't think you will really be able to control how long the heater runs for or control the cabin temperature. The WDS shows the same connections between the remote tranceiver and the heater for all X5 model years, so it's not even as though it might be different on later models. I think the T80 is about as advanced as you can use, it will at least tell you if the car has received your start signal. (And its half the price of the T100) |
