To answer your question, see below, YES its important The oil pressure relief valve is usually located at the pulley end of the engine, right around the oil pump. When the engine is cold, the oil becomes cold and thick. It is at this time that the oil pressure relief allows oil to flow directly to the bearings from the oil pump. As the engine heats up, the oil becomes thinner and hot. Without the oil pressure relief valve, too much oil would flood the engine parts and spray onto the cylinder walls, resulting in excessive oil consumption and a reduction in overall engine power. |

Based on the included thread I would discuss with BMW. Perhaps BMW never replaced your pump. This indicates the failure will not cause low oil pressure which would be my primary concern. Doesn't sound like it has to be done immediately but I would not even start it until I spoke with BMW, a dealer tech and/or a well recommended BMW specialty shop. |
Hello e53 owners! I am having a problem with my completely stock 4.8is. 139k on the clock.
Issue: when accelerating in automatic mode, the transmission seems to sit at 3k rpms while shifting through the gears, instead of your typical 2000rpm smoothly to 3000rpm, then next gear, and so on, if that makes sense. Another piece to add, If I am in manual mode let's say 3rd gear, trying to just use the torque of the motor from 1800rpm, it will jump to 3000, and then as the vehicle speed catches the rpm, it will then 'match' and continue in a linear fashion. This ONLY happensin the lower to middle rpms, anything above 3700 seems to not, I guess you could say, slip. Any ideas on this? Thank you guys in advance. I love this forum. |
Are there other symptoms, noises? Can you check for error codes?

With the symptoms you have I would expect error codes. What are you using to check for codes?
