Thanks LeMans,
The first set of pics are high quality plus. Wow, what a sensational way to promote the beastly big brother in the E53 X5 family. This should be an interesting thread by the time it's run its course. Sorry I can't contribute pics etc as I only have a 3.0i (still a very happy owner however:thumbup:) |
Mine aren't cool BMW pictures! But maybe I should work on getting some?!? :dunno:

I have the 4.6is, but I too enjoy driving it very much. Excellent vehicle. I would not put it in E39 M5 category (yes, I have owned one), nor would I expect a 4.8is to be even close to an M5. But for a decent sized SUV it is really a screamer and a serious hoot to drive. I continue to be amazed by what it can do. I normally drive it pretty mellow because it is my long distance trip car, so it sees mostly longer highway runs, and also weekend duty when the entire family is headed somewhere (that doesn't happen all that much these days - crazy schedules with two teenagers going to different schools and both involved in sports). Today I drove 150+ miles mostly freeway and enjoyed every minute of it. I actually look forward to soccer games played far away from home when I get to take the X5. My daily driver is no slouch, mind you - Audi S4 with a 6-speed and 350hp V8. It too is a real joy to drive. But the X is special in it's own way and I really love heading out for a road-trip in it after not driving it for a week or so. I was alone for a short while today in it, and I took a turn I know well and normally jam through in the S4. I took it pretty damn fast in the X and I was really amazed at how well composed the car was and the level of grip it had rivaled the S4 too. Sure - it is nowhere near as nimble or responsive. But considering it is a SUV, and as heavy as it is - the X is just an amazing vehicle in "is" trim. Cheers to BMW for making it for the few of us who wanted that little bit more than the "base" V8 - sport model...

Because it is his theory on its head. But, sorry as we do, the laws of the inertia of the mass will probably have to be rewritten. Guilt is BMW. Guilt is the X5 4.8is. Guilt is this big blue thing. When a metal sheet pile of over 2.2 tonnes in about six seconds at a speed of 100 races and a lot less than a half-minute takes to demolish the 200-mark, sorry, it has to do with really very little to inertia. And if such a breaker then like a Neunelfer increases in the iron and after a good 37 meters from 100 km / h comes to a halt, then physics seems to be permanently suspended. But we cool down first time and see what we have there. An X5. Not normal. The new King of Bavaria. 15 millimeters deeper than his brothers, completely covered with aprons. Including air-leveling on both axles. The ground clearance can be raised or lowered by 20 millimeters by 40 mm. This 20-inch rollers, which vorbeischrammen narrowly on the edge of embarrassment - at the front 275er, 315er rear tires. Inside noble, but not modern In the interior (almost) everything as usual and everything - so clear - very classy. Bright leather, dark wood, chest sports. The fact that the X5 is no longer a virgin visually, one notices in here, most likely. There are now more modern cockpit. Keys for us, we now slowly pleasure center before. Hood on, sheet in hand: 4.8-liter V8, 360 hp, torque 500 Nm. A mega-steam hammer, developed exclusively for the over-X5. Derived from the familiar 4.5-liter V8, easily drilled () plus a millimeter, and refined with a new crankshaft (5.6 mm) longer stroke, coupled with a specially modified six-speed automatic transmission. Does not a man, you may think. If they are right. Our green conscience is the 4.8iS as welcome as an oil slick of the oyster bank. Only emission Euro 3, gladly beyond consumption of the twenties. The LCA is the question. But the fascination with cars so, fortunately, takes place one floor below - in the belly. And says: Do want! Specifications Overview At the latest when the V8 at the first gas blast muffled grumbling releases its 360 Bayerngäule on the blue steel giant, and this accelerates as lightly as the massive body consists mainly of goose down, so at least then all resistance is broken. That you can measure exactly with the long-legged will still nimble and dynamic as with a sports car around curves, while hardly any body roll and responsive steering feel follows, which some would wish Normalo cars - that fascinates. Unbelievable what one can buy today for cash. Modern technology shifts the boundaries of what the mind still get it. And the same goes for the money. For what BMW calls exceeds limits. With stamps of 81,600 euros 4.8iS its only 40 hp 4.4i weaker brother almost the special offer. The least cost one less well-equipped golf (62,700 euros). The last sequence on 5th gear drifting is cool - the sound is great too.
Does anyone remember seeing a video of a guy in a black 4.8is coming out of a sharp turn in a parking lot and lifting the front inside wheel? Looks like he just flatfooted it with wheels locked after he gets it rolling, the inside wheel came off the ground 4-8 inches. Might have been in a video about exhaust upgrades. That video belongs on this thread. |

However, that's a no-go for now as in-laws are coming and gonna need to buy a mini-van. :( Love the 4.8 so keeping it instead of trading her in on the mini-van. 4.8is oil temp gauge
Hi anyone know where the 4.8is picks up the oil temprature from? which switch and where is it located?
|
Quote:
Wait a sec ... does the 4.8 have oil temp?! Maybe just oil pressure gauge. I'll have to check that. The X is my wife's daily driver and I really don't remember. Okay, is it that X5s in the UK have the oil temp gauge in place of the water temp in the USA? I ASSumed it was for the US X5. Lemme look some more ... Nevermind ... the oil temp gauge is in the lower portion of the tach. I never noticed. :D RealOEM.com BMW E53 X5 4.8is Oil supply - oil cooler connection http://www.realoem.com/bmw/diagrams/l/r/141.png |
Yep its the UK model, it has the oil temp in the bottom of the rev counter where the instant economy gauge normally goes.
|
yeah mine too does have an oil temperature gauge, i also wondered what the hell has that to do with the driver! my primary school science told me that oil lubricates and prevent metals or materials from strangling each other hot... so i expect oil to be hot too or somewhere there! Now if the dashboard gauge tells me "Your Oil is Hot" do I just to park my car under a tree and wait for it to cool down!? And when OIL is hot what causes it!?
|
Quote:
Oil's basic function is to be at a sufficient psi between bearing surfaces to keep them from touching. To maintain this psi, you have to choose the correct weight oil for the operating temperature you're experiencing. For normal use, you are around 210 degrees or so, but when racing can go much higher. If the engine runs hot, you want a 'thicker' oil to compensate for the temp difference and maintain that psi. If the engine runs cool, you need a thinner oil. Of course on modern cars the manufacturer has already figured everything out for us, but if you want to know the why's and how's this is the best article I have ever read on the subject: Everything you ever wanted to know about oil: Motor Oil - All Chapters, Inclusive -Copy and Save This - FerrariChat.com |

I agree that anthracite maple is indeed nice. It's not my favorite finish, but it's up there. It does look especially good with two-tone interiors like the Champagne leather seats or the Truffle Brown setup. Another nice thing about it is that it is quite rare. Of the 11 different finishes that BMW offered for the X5 trim I think it's probably among the nicest 3.

You can see just about all the finishes by looking at X5's on ebay. Note there is no "dark walnut." There is a Dark Poplar and a Smoke Grey poplar (aka Anthracite Maple).

Graphite trim is same color as the door handles on 4.8is.

When I read your post it reminded me when I was considering making the change to a similar finish. If you want to match the current finish of your door handles then make sure you know which of the two you have, titanium or graphite metallic. Yes smoke-grey poplar is quite nice. I once saw it on a 4.8is with the champagne leather two-tone interior and it was amazing. Unfortunately that finish isn't cheap, however you can always offset the cost a little by selling your current finish. You can either buy the pieces separately or contact someone like Roveractive for a full kit. Just make sure you get the parts you need and not more or less (i.e. proper shirt know, nav versus CD radio cover, etc.) See here:

My 4.8is LOVVEELY!!!!
I love this truck. I have had 2 Porsche GT3's and now my 09 Carerra S
with PDK. The best car I have ever driven PERIOD. But I have to say when I get in my truck and start it up, I get a big smile! Its so much fun and for a truck its almost not fair. I can drive my 911 every day if I want. But I get in this truck and I get in a mood where I drive it for a week or longer before I get back to the 911. Hey does anybody have a list of Mods we should do? Like what are the upgrades we can do like Dinan? |
2 GT3's? Nice!
|
Hi all, I am a big fan of this truck and I intend to buy one but in our forum of the BMW Owners Club Bulgaria (that's in Europe right next to Greece ) we are kind of short on E53 4.8is owners. So there is not enough info... and I am kindly asking if could bother to tell me about your experience with the vehicle, because you have been driving these machines for some time now. Any info on mechanical problems , maintenance and little things that annoy you ... would help
really big THANKS in advance  |
No problems in my 2006 4.8is. Its got 32000 miles on it. I have the new Continental Extreme Contact tire on it (DWS version OK on snow)
Its pretty reliable and keeps me from buying a Cayenne. I am a huge Porsche Fan but this truck is too good to sell. |

Kelem I have waited for the service interval. Its almost time.
You can do it sooner. The dealer has a computer that will hook up to your X5 and reset the interval display. I run this truck in the Mojave desert, which is VERY hot. Today after a very cool spring (because there is no global warming), it got to 105. AND I run it in the snow. There is no problems. Also no knocking as far as I am aware. |
Great :D I'll be posting pictures as soon as I get my hands on one from our local dealers!
BTW sounds like you tested it really good :popcorn:desert ,snow, as far as I know BMW test their vehicles in similar conditions. |

Figured im part of the club now.lol. Its an 04 with 44000 miles, Im second owner and car is in great shape. Interior is sport seats, silver trim, with alacantara black and white checker board stuff, will post more pics later. The only thing wierd is when you mash the gas to kickdown mode it seems to have a very slight tick like small exhaust leak, or maybe they all do that??? You cant even hear it unless all the windows are down. Any thoughts on that???

Nice!! What headlight kit is that? Thinking of getting something like that for my 4.8is. How bright is it during the day?
|
nice color on the wheels. is that powdercoating? great looking ride!
edit: carlosa those look about like my Angel Eyes v3 from AngeliBright.com - Custom Angel Eyes - BMW (I got mine used though). they look pretty good during the day but I still lust for something a bit brighter (tho these are much brighter than stock I think). |
Thank you Thank you! Yup they are the Angel Eyes v3 from AngeliBright.com. They are nicely brighter than stock but not very bright. During the day you can see them but they dont stand out very much.
The wheels are powdercoated gloss black too. Thanks again for the comments |

Been a member for a while but I'm officially part of the club now. I feel like a connoisseur due to the plethora of knowledge that exists on this forum. Thanks to all, I look forward to a lot more activity on here now that I'm actually an owner.

Thanks guys, can't wait to start the mods. Nothing radical though, I'm a fan of the stock look. BMW did a great job when designing this one.
|
Right on man finally :) Youll love it. I want one of those bikes too, love the color too. i love my speed triple but those things are even more wicked than my 1050.
|
Hey Ben, thanks. Yeah the Motorsport color was IT for me when I heard the color scheme. Figures the color I choose is the one that like 75 to 90 percent of the 2010 models were ordered in. The Speed Triple is a beautiful naked and definitely just as unique in character.

Forester.. love the black rims.
I think this interior combo is the best.. but that's why I've got it! ha. Black interior with Cream Sport Seats; is this natural or light poplar? http://i574.photobucket.com/albums/s...3/DSCF2281.jpg http://i574.photobucket.com/albums/s...3/DSCF2283.jpg |
I recently bought my 2006 Titanium Silver (36K miles) with full Dinan Cold Air/Software and Exhaust and the result is simply nothing short of phenomenal. You say you grin when you start up the X5, well with the Dinan Exhaust I have a full blown belly laugh! Deep yet very european refined growl that only German V8 know how to produce. To this date I still find every excuse to drive the X5 around the corner for a loaf of bread or whatever...

tires
Hey all,
I'm looking to replace my OE tires, I own an '04 E53, 4.8is. The rear tires are about to their limit and looking for something similar in performance, and maybe a little bit more quiet. Those Michelin Diamaris are pretty awesome to look at but slightly loud on the highway. I've done a few searches and heard a few people talking about the Vredestein Sessanta are a pretty nice set. I live in Northern CA and aside from the rare trips to Tahoe, I don't plan on doing much of snow driving. In any case, what are you guys recommending out there? What's the most bang for your bucks? What are you impressing on Michelin Lattitude, Toyo proxes etc.. Any feedback would be gladly appreciated. |
Ive got the toyos up front and sessanta's in the rear. Some have said the sessanta's dont last very long but i think that verdict is still out based on the fact they are cheaper also. I havent had mine very long but the tires were almost new when i bought the car so i cant really speak for longevity but ive always had good luck with any toyo tires. The toyos are a little noisey but the car being all wheel drive the combination of proxxes up front and the sessantas in back ive already had pretty good luck with this combo on snow and ice if that helps. The tires overall now matter what tread pattern wont be ideal because they are so wide. Its kinda like having traction up front and race in the back with this combo. But if you know how to drive in those conditions you shouldnt have much of an issue. IMHO. When its time for me to get new tires I will probably get either the all bridgestone setup or toyo all the way around, whichever i can get a better deal on. FWIW
|
I 100% recommend the Toyos - we have them on both X5 is's and they are wonderful tires. They even perform decently in the snow to the point that I'm going to skip snow tires this year.

No turn signals with Driving lights on
Hey folks I have heard that it is possible through software programming to force the turn signals to be off while the Driving lights are on. Is there some other configuration that the software can be set to that way? For instance I would love to have the driving lights on all the time meaning only the angels and nothing else every time the car is on.
Thanks guys. |
Not sure, sounds like you'd have to modify the LkM, or reroute the angel eyes to its own switch and power source

If you are in a more moderate climate than MN you'll probably be fine, but I decided to play it safe and get some snow tires. Obligatory picture: http://www.nom3rcy.com/X5/x5-lm60-rk-snow.jpg |
nom3rcy,
Great looking setup! I have Toyos on my 4.8is and am gonna give them a try this winter in CA. I would like to do a winter wheel set at some point when I frequent the mountain more than a few times during the season. What wheel/tire/size combination are you using there? Any Spacers? Thanks |
I had the Damaris installed at 37k miles. With roughly 53k on the clock, I needed new tires, which I was not pleased about. I did a little reading and opted to go with the Michelin Latitudes. They are fantastic. The X5 currently has 84k on and it the tires still look new. Plenty of thread remaining and are fantastic in the now or slipper road conditions.
I was caught in NH during a 5" snow storm, the car had the Damaris on them and I felt very sketched. The X5 was definitely all very the place. The latitudes are leaps and bounds better in the snow. I have never felt uneasy in the snow or icy road conditions since I installed them and they still handle remarkably on a dry surface. Transitioning from the Damaris to the Latitude was a great choice and I don't feel I lost any turning, safety or braking performance at all. Quote:

Wow, sounds pretty amazing. Might have to look into those Mitchy Lats next time I need tires.

My pops X, had and has the LatitudeHP tour, on his X 19's and they covered 95000KM :) roughly from nov06'. There was still some tread on them but not enough to trust for winter here, I said better change them out. Installted the same ones brand new and it feels so much more stable and secure and they are great in the snow he feels the same.

I couldn't tell any difference between the Damaris and latitudes with regards to summer performance. I occasionally put the X5 through its paces and never felt the tires weren't able to keep up, I think the latitudes are a much better, well rounded tire.
I'm not sure how much better the scorpions are or can be, if we continue to get snow in VA, i will probably buy a dedicated snow tire. For now, the Latitudes do GREAT! If fact, I have a video of me pulling a Chevy P/U out of a snow bank today. I will attach it later. Quote:

Thanks for the recommendation. I had some Bridgestone Dueler's on another vehicle in 2001 and hey did really well. Not sure if they are exactly the same but I was happy with those. |

Do you have to use snow or winter tires in US? In Germany it is not allowed to drive around with summer tires in winter.

I just picked this up used from my local BMW Dealer in Monterey CA. The previous owner took emasculate care of it and the carafe and service history was perfect. $20k 110,000mi.

Picked mine at a great outfit in Atlanta. 36k miles, all Dinan stuff already on it (Cold Air, Software, Exhaust)! immaculate and VERY fast. $34k
Will post some pics when I have time to do the car justice and find the right setting. I love this car. One question for you guys. I want to be able to turned down the side front marker while still having the angels on when I drive. Anybody knows how to get that done? Thanks |

That sure does look lower than just the air suspension, i dont think mine will go that low???. Looks great either way, like all the blacked out logos too :)
|
Yeah, mine does not go that low either! I wish it did. I lowered mine with the stock air suspension button and then pulled the fuse for the air suspension ride so it stayed low. My cluster has all kinds of lights on now..lol.
|
Mine doesn't go that low either... I wish it did though, well maybe a bit higher.
So FYI- At around 65k miles I was experiencing a very faint diff whine at exactly 60mph. The last visit to the dealer for free CPO maintenance, I had them change the oil and front brakes and I also had them change all the fluids in the F&R differentials, transfer case and the transmission. My slight Diff whine is 100% gone! I figured I would post this in case some of you are experiencing the diff whine at or around 60mph. |
my new X5 4.8, a change from my last car (Evo 8 MR FQ-400).
Low mileage and i love it. http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._8096530_n.jpg http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._5478409_n.jpg http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._1395734_n.jpg |

Very nice X5 ^^. Super jealous of your clear corners in the UK though. Wish we could get those in the US.

Is the clear corner the only difference in the headlight assembly? Is there a difference in the projector from the US version to the Euro version?

Price Suggestion
Gents,
I was hoping you could help me decide on a fair asking price for my 4.8is. 05 Silver/Black 4.8is 85,600 miles All new fluids (Engine oil, tranny, transfer, F&R diffs) December 31 F&R brakes done under extended warranty, December 31 Good tires/ inspection Extras- Rear seat cover, roof rack with BMW roof box and invision head rest DVD players. The X5 is in immaculate condition and zero mechanical issues. Vehicle runs great, is very strong + fun! We need to upgrade so we are forced to sell it, with 2 boys under 3 and one in the oven, we have come to the conclusion that we are definitely going need more room. Thanks, Ryan |
