New hardware couldn't hurt, make sure the surface area is clean when reassembling back together with fresh gasket. Also, drain as much out as possible to avoid the inevitable mess.

Not excited about the mess.. going to pick up a oil catch pan in the hopes it catches most of it!

Let the oil drain for about an hour and you won't have much oil dripping while the pan is off. Kitty litter will absorb the dripping so cleanup is easy. Simple Green is great to wipe up what is left.

Be sure to check the bottom of the pan to see if there is any evidence of timing guide deterioration and the magnets for any fillings.

I smear a very small amount of high temp gasket maker (in a tube) around the corners and a couple of locations down the side to hold the gasket in place until I get bolts threaded in those places.

Barely snug the bolts up and then use a torque wrench to tighten the bolts so you don't risk breaking one off. I use a quarter inch ratchet so I don't have much leverage just snugging them up. Before screwing in each bolt check to make sure it is going through the gasket.

Torque spec is 10NM or 7 inch pounds. Pan isn't heavy but is awkward to get back in place. I never have a helper for that part but it would make it a lot easier.

Spotted Titanium Silver 4.8iS on 66-east yesterday around 245p

Spotted a 4.8is on Copart in Washington. Looked clean and cheap last I checked:

Im looking for some advice! I just got my E53 4.8is back from a service appointment. When I arrived they handed me a piece from my oil pump that they found in the oil filter. It is the oil pressure relief valve. Now, they want nearly 5,000 CAD. to replace the oil pump. Im wondering how important this is, and if i can drive without it? To my understanding its not important until i need it! but i don't full understand its function either. Any one that does?
