I also like the sweeping mpg gauge. Wholly useless and mostly inaccurate, but sooo satisfying to watch it sweep across the bottom of the dial. I miss that in the 4.8 as well.

Shouldn't be too long now till 190k. C'moooonn 200!

Love seeing the v8s in these high numbers. N62 prob the last v8 that can do the high range. N63 has too many obstacles in it's way. Mostly the regular maintenance that's never done because it requires engine removal!

I love the latter iterations of the motor but I wouldn't own one unless I had a lift and a spare car.

I like and use the swing mpg gauge. I will watch it while climbing hills and bump cruise control down 1mph when the sweep drops to 20 and repeat unitil I crest the hill or hit 5-6 mph drop. On the way down the hill I'll speed up 1mph every time it gets higher than 30.

Using that method I've been able to bump mpg on a 300 mile trip from about 21 to 23 (11% better).

With my new X5 and n55 motor I've been able to bump a typical 24 up to 26-27 Also 11-12.5% gain.

It's really not difficult and if there are enough lanes to not cause a traffic jam I'll do it pretty often.

My best effort was 27mpg on a full tank!

(Over 600 miles range!)

I typically get about 550 highway so an extra 50 miles on a tank when the hills play in my favor and I don't have traffic behind me to slow down.

I've owned my '01 X5 for just over 3 years now, and have never driven it at night (though I check all lighting for functionality), and thus haven't really experienced the orange glow from the instrument panel, yet. It isn't appreciable in daylight, testing the lights.

I bought an '88 Pontiac Fiero for my wife many years ago (she wanted a Corvette, since a friend had one, but the used Fiero made her happy, for awhile), and it had red lighting on the instruments. I didn't do much night-driving in it, but having never viewed "red" lighting before, it was pretty neat. I'm sure the BMW orange will be better!

Take it out just for fun and a true test of headlights. Enjoy the neon glow from the headliner and door that lets you see your hand on total darkness

The amber/orange glow is my favorite dash lighting color. I won't buy an aftermarket head unit for any of my vehicles unless they can replicate that color on their buttons or display.

Edit: This is a mileage thread so I should at least add mine. Just got back from an overnight Houston trip and am just shy of 134k miles.

Fine. Make me want the sweeper that much worse. Dammit. :(

about to hit 120,000 !

no leaks. paint is great. runs perfect other than slightly low idle. headliner is absolute TRASH. door handle carriers starting to go. door cars come to pieces when taking off. interior was MINT until a few weeks ago when muriatic acid from the pool store ruined the leather on the rear passenger seat.

my last e53 went past 200 with ZERO headliner issues. this one just falls off by itself. but the old one started shedding paint at 120. factory defect style.

Saw double zeros and took a pic. :bmw:
Quick pick on Texas Austin's autobahn.
I had to relearn how to set the cruise control. :wow:
Reset the MPG to see what it would read. Ran out of toll road first. MPGs were still going up.

CTRL (key) and scroll up. Zoom! Ha! Thanks! I couldn't crop it to fit for uploading. Cruise set to 80 MPH was no problem. It was cruising nice and steady. I kept an eye open on the temp gauge. It was running great until I merged onto I35. Speed was down to 45 MPH.

Got another ~800 miles or so this weekend. Taking the bikes to a Saturday and Sunday ride as we drop off our little Sophomore to college.
