I've done some checking and I can get an M54 as low as 60,000+/-. Cost about $2000 delivered to residential address. If I did a rebuild I'd get a very old engine and do it. But I'm guessing cost for parts and machining would be $3k. I haven't researched that one.

Look on ebay for reman m54. Get a long block and move over the accessories. Depending time of year and availability, I would likely be able to come help. I'm in Pennsylvania building a house addition at the moment i live in southeast Wisconsin

every time, it seems the same

Every time I see this thread "What is the mileage of your X5?", it seems to trigger a song loop in my head:

"Same as it ever was, same as it ever was, same as it ever was, same as it ever was, same as it ever was, same as it ever was. same as it ever was, same as it ever was" (Talking Heads "Once in a Lifetime"), repeating ad infinitum

I haven't driven it in months (Nov.6,2025), haven't worked on it in months (Feb.3,2026), haven't much thought about it, either. Health problems and expenses keep cropping up (unexpected oral surgery last week), and all my other health problems NEVER get resolved. My wife drives most of the time, and I've been using my old HHR Panel if I need to drive myself. Shit happens.

I miss my X.

I'll look into that, thanks. That's a very generous offer. I'm a long way from Wisconsin!

I did a compression test on the low cylinders today and put a few squirts of oil in and sure enough the compression came up to 185. I'm going to try the process with EPR. A can in the oil and idle for four hours, then EPR on top of the pistons for an overnight soak. Then drain and fresh oil and filter. We'll see what happens. Figure I have nothing to lose. It's not likely to make the compression worse.

Sorry to hear it. Getting old sucks. Not sure what I'm going to do when I can't work on my car. Working on it is my "happy place".

Ya me too. 64 in two days, but still in pretty good shape.

So far.

I tend to put off repairs but once into it I'm a maniac.

Dang- Looks like all your pixels are there!

And yeah, getting old is NOT for the faint of heart. It's like playing whack-a-mole. The thought of getting under a car or contorting to get under the dash, etc. is a non-starter.
