I have 2 E53 X5 models. Both 2003 vintage. The red rocket 4.6is has 70K. I have the parts to: valve cover swap ( Aluminum jobs this time!,Lemforder control arms, both left and right mirrors, 2 new front speakers,

For the stick shift 3.0, I have exactly 140K. PO was really good at maintaining the X5.
Have parts to : Front drive shaft boots, both Tie rods, the drivers window is stuck down, and my outside door handle is jacked up. I swapped out non heated for a set of heated front seats. It does get cold here. I have a whistle sound somewhere in the intake system. Every once in a while I get a left and right bank lean condition light.
I bought all the parts to do an intake-ectomy. Now that I have tried a 3.0 engine, that is my preference for X5 engines. Sadly, BMW has never built a reliable V8 engine.
IMHO.

Smoke test your intake. It's much faster than just swapping parts. The first part to look at is the rubber intake elbow. The small tube leading off that to the idle control valve often cracks.

+1 for the smoke test. You can get smoke machines that aren't too expensive. Allows you to take your time and find leaks methodically rather than use the parts cannon (or spraying carb cleaner all over the place while the engine is running).
