The nut is an oddball 12 point deal that a 6 point would not fit.

... looking for a 36mm 12-point socket for the drive shaft. Nobody had it. Took the vehicle to a local shop asking them to just break it free for me so I could replace the drive shaft, but they didn't have that size either so had to special order it from the web.

What?? a 36mm 12 point socket? wtf is that, ive took the driveshaft put with just a wrench and rachet.

Also had a hard time finding a 16mm socket, which seems to be a pretty common size for this vehicle, but no other vehicles. Before you guys write me off as an idiot...do a little homework...go look at metric socket sets at Sears and auto parts stores...no 16mm and usually no 19mm. Same with open-end wrench sets.
They come in the most basic cheap autozone toolkits.

Now I have a garage full of BMW-only tools and code scanners that I'll never use again and will never get back what I paid for all of it.

All I can say about BMW now if someone asks is, "buy a new one, and buy the most expensive extended warranty package they will offer". "If you don't have $10,000 just lying around for repairs, don't bother...you will be taking a taxi."

Oh and term there are Multiple Cherry clubs in russia! I was at a Poleklinika and there was an amulet in front of me and on the back window there were like 10 stickers of 10 different cherry clubs

Believe it or not I got the exact 12pt 36mm socket for $8.99 from Pep Boys, granted I checked twice and it was out of stock, but the third time it was there.

GearWrench brand too. I use it on my oil filter housing as well since that is 36mm 6 pt.

Not as uncommon as one might think if you can get it in Pep Boys lol!

I'll gladly offer a ride cross-country in my 2002. At 242,000 miles it's still as reliable as anything I've ever driven. And big trips and 60 mile commutes have gotten the mileage up there. I've had the usual repairs, an alternator, expansion tank, four window regulators, one door handle carrier and a couple of FSRs. With one exception, I've just done proper maintenance with things like brake fluid flushes and hose changes. The only disappointment was the failure of the front driveshaft splines, and I still can't believe there hasn't been a recall on that - some engineer was asleep when that was designed to engage less than an inch into the transfer case. But as I sweep around a tight Dallas cloverleaf at 45 mph...all is well!

I forgot about replacing that darn water cooled alternator.

I live in an even smaller midwestern city (who here has ever heard of Sioux Falls, SD, much less been here? :rofl: ) and I have zero problems finding the tools to get the same jobs done that this guy has been unable to do. In fact, the socket needed to get the axle nut loose was part of a cheapo Chinese 1" socket/ratchet set that I bought at a local farm and home store (like this one, except with a metal case and a price tag about $120 less.) If he can't find these things in KC, he isn't looking very hard. And we do realize that even though that nut is 36mm, a 1 5/16" would work just fine.

As for the so-called mechanics that can't get the job done, words fail me.

I'll cut the OP some slack and guess that his rant was fueled by alcohol or low blood sugar; at any rate, his silence since page one is deafening.
