I'm gonna fix the vapor barriers on a couple windows and pull the carpet to let it dry as well as finish wiring in the sub amp, valve cover, etc, redo the brake quiet on the rear brakes blah blah. I'd rather just unhook the battery the whole time and not deal with any unpleasant surprises.

Anti-theft radio codes ended with the e32/e34/e36/z3 BMWs. As the next generation of 3/5/7 BMWs (e38/e39/e46/e53) debuted...BMW went to a completely different audio set-up where multiple & separate components are used to create an audio system...along with some of the components being model specific...which cuts down on usage in the black market for stolen items.

Plus many components have short term memory and don't loose their settings if power loss is brief. For the scenario you described...you should be fine. About the only things that may need to be reset are:
  1. sunroof (instructions are in owners manual)
  2. reset clock (instructions are in manual for which ever set-up you have...MID or NAV)
  3. reset OBC features programmed into the cluster display (if you have the high OBC) (instructions are in owners manual)
For example...I just read the info in the quote below in a current thread just below this one about removing fuses & negative battery cable to kill juice to radio in order to do some work...notice what this forum member just verified:

I have disconnected the battery many times for 1-4 days. I have never lost anything critical or had an --oh S$%t now what do I do moment?

My build date is listed on the info plate as 12/2004. However, the vehicle was originally delivered before Christmas 2004 and multiple components I have come across have 07/04 written on them. Should I still use 12/04 when searching realOEM, etc?

Yes...you should use the 12/04 build date...OR...the last 7 digits of your VIN.

As far as some items having a build date a few months prior to your MFG date...that's normal. The plant in So Carolina has to have stock before they can start building the car...so a part mfg'd a few months before the car went down the assembly line is normal. If the date is later than the build date...then it's been replaced since it came down the assembly line. :)

But some people posted that to delete ECM adaptations you must disconnect the battery for 4-6 hours. The ECU will be back to when the car was first built and will learn the new driver's adaptations.

Does the X5 have 5 microphones or what is this ??

Looking at the top headliner toward the windshield:

I see one microphone to the right of the the SOS/call for help button (circled in BLUE here and hard to see in my bad photo).

Then toward on the headliner more toward the rear of the car I see the square with what looks to be four microphones in it (one facing away from each corner), circled in RED here. Are these microphones or something else?

Any idea which of these are the blue tooth mics?

Thanks helping me solve my dumb question of the month here

I think they are interior motion sensors

:iagree: they are motion sensors for the alarm

they are used on the cars with pano roof - with regular sunroof or the ones without one (are there ones without the sunroof?), they would use a stand alone unit in the center of the ceiling lining (if so equipped - some cars outside of NA market did not come with alarms factory instaled)

The mic for BT/phone is the one circled in blue. As the others above already mentioned, the 2 things circled in red are areas for the ultrasonic interior motion sensor.

Prior to the Pano sunroof (which you obviously have)...the interior motion sensor was in the middle of the headliner and the area you have circled was a sunglass compartment...but when you have the Pano sunroof, the sensor is moved up to the area you have circled in red since you can't put a sensor in the middle of a moving glass panel. :)

Thank you Qsilver7! I should have noticed that sensor was not above my head as in the 530, as you say per pano sunroof. Interesting on the X5 the sensor has open grills you can see into. On the 530i I recall it as a closed unit but not positive.

This would be the motion sensor that my dogs like to trip when I forget to disable it by clicking the remote 2 or 3 lock clicks.

Appreciate the info here.
