My thought exactly on depreciation, I bought my GLI out of college new and if I wanted to sell it in 2-3 years it would sell for a third of what I purchased for.

OP, if you want performance mods I'd suggest put an Xpipe on the 4.4 (for sound), get a tune for the engine and AFE intake.

Cjallstar 03-05-2014 04:40 PM

yea I'm gonna look into an x pipe... as far as the tune it looks like the dinah tunes only are effective with the throttle body installed? can anyone speak to this? ricky i take it you like your afe?

I sure do at the $120 I paid for it (used from a member here), be sure to go with the Pro Dry S washable and non-oiled filter.

The N62 intakes aren't as cheap as the M54 ones though I believe, check ebay for going pricing, the 3.0 intakes were around $230 give or take. I like sellers that have a best offer option as it usually nets my items for a few bucks less than buy it now price.

Same boat same car ... So we have 2 ... the 128i convertible for the anytime summer road trip and the 4.4 X5 V8 that i'm in love since day one....to me the e53 SAV look as great as the new one and this is what i like with BMW.
I plan to keep it another 3 or 4 years.

Hey guys, been a long time since i posted on here! I have a 2006 4.4i to which i have done a bunch of exterior upgrades (.is spoilers, upgraded AE's, running boards, spacers, style 87's etc). She currently has 102,000 miles on her and the aftermarket warranty is set to expire in a few hundred miles. The X is currently at the dealer having the AC blower fixed and drivers side door lock fixed, both under warranty and is having other routine maintenance work done. I have had the dealer check everything out by doing a vehicle condition check, and the only thing that came up as bad was the power steering hoses which I am having replaced. My question to you all is is it time to sell the X:dunno:? I love this car, I owe no payments on it and I have had no mechanical issues (aside from the normal tranny jerk). What am I looking at replacing in the near future and at what estimated cost? Of course if things go south quickly I would sell the X, but it is hard to part with it now as it has no problems and I would rather not incur the cost of getting a different vehicle. I am going to explore getting another aftermarket warranty but of course I would only get one if I should decide to keep the car. Would love to get any and all of your guys' take on this. Thanks a bunch fellas!

I don't know what you have done but suspension is getting in the area where it may need to be rebuilt. Transmission problems are unpredictable. Depending on what you mean by tranny jerk it is not normal. Things like water pump, coolant hoses, alternator are more likely to cause a problem over 100,000 miles by nothing is for sure- it is the luck of the draw. As far as cost to fix it depends on who does the work so I'm no help there.

Based on my experience with the X5, I would keep it until I didn't like it anymore. The is a lot to be said for the devil you know is better than devil you don't.

To sell or not to sell the X

The tranny jerk I speak of is the one from first to second after first starting the car and accelerating. Feel like everyone on here has felt it at some point and I know I have off and on for the longest time. Think it will be solved with the coolant flush and ATF/ Power steering hose leaks that are currently being repaired. There is a thread a few lines down that goes into this in detail. I am not surprised to hear about suspension pieces needing to be replaced as that would be normal wear and tear for any vehicle. Anyone who has had suspension work done can speak to cost? I am aware I will need to spend money on maintenance, and the possibility of catastrophic/prohibitively expensive repairs but that is a risk I am willing to take.

DKL how many miles do you have on your X?

Sorry...I accidentally deleted my own post
The X is at 93k miles right now and celebrating its 10th birthday as we speak. Brought it home with 10 miles on the odometer on March 5th, 2004 and never looked back. Didn't even crossed my mind at the time to get any extended warranty after the original 4 years/50k manufacture warranty expired; knowing all sorts of loopholes that are built into every single extended warranties out there. I would rather sock away my own "warranty money" so I can decide when and what I want to replace/fix rather than handing over my money to someone who elect to tell me what I can or cannot repair...just my 2 pennies ;)

So far, the X has been super reliable...never left me stranded. Nothing major other than your normal maintenance. The 2 most costly operating expenses are gas and tires, which it loves to gobble up. Staggered 19s are so expensive...I'm lucky if I can get a set to go 20k :( I think I spent more money on tires than repairs on the car :yikes:

I would recommend a BMW independent shop called Martin MotorSports in Alexandria. Gary, the owner, is a "car guy" and has helped many a BMW owner get a handle on many issues over the years. He gets the idea of mods and is open to support your habits. Gary owns a X5, a M5 and a host of others. Tell him Stephen sent you and he will take care of you. I have known Gary for some 20+ years. I have even pulled a few wrenches for him when i was between jobs 5 years ago.

Now if you would like to do somethings yourself, stop my place by anytime as I am always playing with some BMW or another. There is a few of us in the area that can offer tips tricks and pitfalls to avoid.

Drop me a PM

I had a hard time getting over 10K on the rear 315s of the 4.8. 2 sets of rears for every front. ;)

If/when you rebuild the suspension are you going to do it yourself or have a shop do the work?
