10,000 to maybe 20,000 life on the rears is normal with all our HEAVY foots (feets?). Love the push we get on HARD stomps. A little bark and off she goes....

It all boils down to all Hwy? Or a mix? Shorter rear tire life expectancy is normal for me. That is why we purchased the V8 models. You want long life? Get the Six banger. :stickpoke

My experience was similar. Best was the middle of that range until I went to Continental Extreme Contacts.

I guessed that I can't complain much then...yikes :yikes:

Zero out the rear toes will decrease the inner thread wear on the rear tires significantly. It won't be best for hway driving but I would trade that anytime.

The toe out issue and the inner wear it creates has not been a problem on my X5. The PO ran a replacement set of tires without checking Tire pressure cold, so when i got it they were 15-20 PSI too high...and thereby the center of the rear tires were at the wearbars in 8K when I picked it up from him. The fronts were at the 60% left mark with cupping due to a poor balance.
I switched over to Michelins Latitude Tour HP. Nice tire, good compromise on handling vs traction in wet/dry conditions. I don't try to push the vehicle to it limits on the street, so I will NEVER see the envelope difference in dry handling. Turn in is good, light snow/ice has been fun. We have some 5-8 inches a few times this year and I can pull hills at will, and deep stuff is not an issue for traction. Others have had experience with other brands and tire models so there are a lot to choose from.

Love the rooster tails coming off the rears on hard accelleration in snow.

Went to dinan installer in Fairfax today.. quoted me about $1500 to install the stage III tune and throttle body...somewhat worth it? also asked him about an x pipe, he told me it would be pointless unless i cut out the cats as well? can anyone speak to that?

StephenVA 03-06-2014 08:18 PM

So you visited the shop over in Merrifield, Va across the street from BMW Fairfax? If you choose to do mods I recommend intake (CAI), exhaust cat back, and a good tune. Dinan is a great choice but there are other pieces that can be substituted for the one extinct Dinan intake and exhaust systems.
I would also consider the auto trans software upgrade.
Oh, there is a spring time discount going at Dinan this month too!

There are others who have done the mods to the exhaust who can speak to the pros and cons of the X pipe. Do a little searching on this site and you will find all about these mods from others who performed them years ago.

To sell or not to sell the X

Yes that is the shop I visited. Have you had any work done there Stephen? What performance mods do you have? I'll be going back there first thing in the AM as I picked the X up from the dealer service dept and now my heated steering wheel won't work?!?! The auto trans upgrade, is that a dealer item? I think I have the most current version.

Nope. I do 90% of the repairs myself. Mods are limited on my 4.8 to just the angel eye bulbs. I am a clean nut so you can eat off mine normally. In this stuff we call the salt mines on the roads around here, I end up washing mine 1-2 x a week by hand.
I wash cars every weekend if the temps are over 38 degrees.

The heated steering wheel is one of my favorite features. Warm fingers...toasty !
