It may be better to do the engine and transmission software and go to a low restriction exhaust and not do the throttle body. The Xpipe will certainly change the sound. The opinions vary as to whether or not it is a go faster mod. The X pipe should improve scavenging which will increase performance. However, if the pre X pipe exhaust is the bottleneck, the X pipe is ineffective. |
+1. Most likely due to software. For best results with a throttle body, you also need to tune the intake runners and the exhaust to allow for more airflow both in and out. You might notice a slight change in throttle response, but no increase in power.
Get a free flowing exhaust (better or no cats) then you can start messing with the intake. It's a matched system, so changing one won't gain any significant increase without changing all (airbox, inlet pipe, throttle body, intake runners, intake valves, fuel injectors, spark plugs, exhaust valves, headers, cats, x pipe, mufflers, then software). And if you don't want to do a supercharger, you'll hit a plateau that is the rev limit of the hydraulic lifters and also the max timing allowed by the VANOS. Could probably live with the 7k limit, but a VANOS delete would open up the top end for more power...at the sake of less power down low ;) The Xpipe is functional mod, but it is specific as to what it does. The Xpipe increases performance at high rpms and the stock H pipe is more beneficial for lower rpm's. And they sound different. H pipe, more V8 rumbly sound, Xpipe more smooth screamer sound. |

The supercharger called for a few modifications but none to the internals. None of the other mods or combination of mods called for any change to plugs, fuel system or valves for their claimed gains. FYI-I didn't do a dino run before I added the Dinan stuff. I did after and the HP and Torque was better than the Dinan claims. The engine software increases the rev limit to 6500 which is after peak HP and torque so it would serve no purpose to go higher. The transmission software keeps the shifts in the max benefit rpms. Now having experience with the cost/benefit of nitrous I would start with nitrous and meth injection and compliment it with low restriction exhaust, engine and transmission software. I would get far more for the money and even gain mileage when not using the nitrous because of the meth. |
@J.Belknap, watching this thread? Did you have to change the injectors or plugs for your supercharger?
Redline is already 6500. the Dinan page doesn't say what the new limit is. P.S. Meth makes your teeth rot. |

I spoke with Dinan. The engine software increases redline 100rpms on the 2006 4.4. He wasn't sure but thought that was to 6200. He said they no longer have the transmission software for the 2006. Not surprised, I have found other instances where website was not current. The intake manifold was not offered for X5 newer than 2003. Didn't ask about MAF or air box as neither are shown on the website. I better check the flywheel teeth they must be about to fall out. |

All they currently offer for 2004+ X5's are a larger throttle body and stage 1-3 engine software. Hiwever, the Stage 2 software is to be used in conjunction with the CAI, which is not currently available. So basically there's stage 1 (to be used alone to raise rev limiter and remove speed limiter) or stage 3 to be used with the throttle body. I would like to do exhaust to improve sound and performance, then a software tune and a CAI if it makes sense. I know dinan used to offer an exhaust but as I stated above don't currently. Anyone have an 04+ 4.4 and have recommendations on an exhaust, CAI and tune? Sounds like those are the easiest to attain and install without making drastic changes to the engine or am I missing something? I'd like to keep the reliability where she's at at current stock level if at all reasonably possible...

Why not get the afe intake and the stage 2 software from dinan? An intake is an intake man
|
Intake is like any other component of the air/fuel system-it can be improved. That said, I seem to recall the intake Dinan offered was not one they produced but a BMW intake. I don't remember where it came from. Nor do I know if the intake was the weakest link.
There are lots of examples of exhaust changes on youtube to get a sense of what it will sound like based on changes you make. I agree, I would do the exhaust first. I would shop around for engine software. I like Dinan but they are pricy. |
