What have you done to your E70 today?

I seen this thread is a few forums but not on the E70 so here we go:

a few days ago I installed:

M package front wheel arches
M Package door trims
Regular rear wheel arches (painted)
And got the black plastic covers on the rear bumper primed/painted silver.

oh i see so are the door moldings shaped different or you just choose to just get new ones instead of painting the existing ones? thanks sorry for all the questions but this is a mod ive been looking to do. love the monochromatic look of the M models

They are not shaped different but they come primed ready to pain, If the boddy shop has to do this they charge a lot of money to prime them and they do not give you any Waranty on the paint in case it starts peeling off.

The wheel arches are shaped different a bit and the rears don't fit without the M package rear bumper.I didn't know this so I have 2 M package rear wheel arches in the garage :(

just got my '07 3.0Si back
i was having some delay with acceleration in lower RPM's
they found the tranny sleeve seal leaking and oil filter housing gasket leaking
looks like they replaced oil filter housing too??.. showing a price of $472 so i'm sure the gasket itself is not that price.
replaced oil pan and filter, oil filter stand gasket
so warranty covered that then of course there's more
coolant hose was starting to dry rot along with the vent piping.. $160
they charged me for refilling anti-freeze.. $23
charged me for atf synthetic.. $59
charged me for windshield washer fluid.. $7
replaced left brake light blub... $4

after warranty i ended up paying $430.. not too impressed as i sent it in thinking everything would be covered by warranty
was done at an Indy shop because of warranty we can't pick and chose where to have it repaired really

*EDIT*
the guy came back and dropped the key off
took it too the gym and back, seems to be fixed
now i wonder if i should still get a sprint booster

Norefjell 06-15-2013 01:39 PM

Installed the Lux V4 angel eyes. Very pleased with the results. However, installation became a process in that the left bulb was absolutely fused at the gasket. Ended up twisting off the end and from there it was a giant mess. Ended up drilling two holes with a Dremel tool to insert two steel pins to be able to create leverage. On further twisting more disintegration and more of a mess. Became a dismantling piece process and then a delicate piece removal process including using a magnet and a special attachment to my shop vacuum to try the best I could to clean up my mess. Wonder what I could and should have done differen? Heat gun, or WD-40? Obviously hoping not for a repeat but it would be good to save someone else.

Installed an OEM Hitch on my '09 35d. All the hitch installation posts made this a less daunting task. Took the suggestion of fellow boarders and modified the hitch and trim piece to minimize the cutout on bumper. Taking in for flashing this week.

Very nice and neat job. Don't forget that you can get it remotely coded, plus enable the rear camera hitch zoom from an independent coder. The dealer will not be able to add the zoom camera function.

Thanks. I took my time and had the help of a friend who is a great (read finicky) welder. I am anxious to get it coded and have not had any remote coding performed before so I am going to use the dealer for this job. I will research an independent coder for future upgrades.

I thought the hitch zoom feature was "standard" for earlier E70 models when the system was flashed for the hitch installation. I hope it is available. That is one of the "cool" features I was hoping to get.

Regards,
Chris D.

kakalika 08-27-2013 07:42 PM

2 Minnesota dealers were unable or unwilling to code the rear zoom, even when I showed them how to do it (got the info from the forums). Rear zoom was a must have for me, since I tow heavy trailers that can't be moved by hand onto the hitch. It was a day of rejoicing when I finally got it coded.
You may have better luck with your local dealer, but I doubt it.

More wanting to know if they are useful at actually filling the gap between the OEM HIDs and the front of the car. And then the scatter to get road side light coverage.

Or are they more just a color match?

These are actual bulbs not the whole housing but they fill the housing perfectly haha.. I haven't had a chance to drive with them at night and no traffic in front of me to see if they are brighter than oems. . We don't get a lot of fig so I bought them more to match the rest of my LEDs. . Now all my lights match except headlight and side markers. . Anyone know what bulb is used for the side markers

-Clay and deep clean wheel barrels off the car (new tires next week - DWS06)
-Wash and seal
-Install Stainless BMW pedal set
-Interior LED's
-Front amber delete with IND Design color matched side markers (if enough time), already have color matched rear reflectors installed :)
-Air filter change to AFE Pro Dry S
-Oil change with Rotella T6 and OE filter (if enough time)

In the coming weeks:
-Euro light switch install and activation of rear fogs

Over the last couple of days I decided to take on a project I had no clue would be so involved. I got tired of seeing the hazard sign in my gauge cluster telling me that the windshield washer fluid was low. Every time I filled it, it would start leaking out really slowly to the point where the sensor would read no fluid.

I started by thinking I was just gonna take the passenger fender off and inspect the reservoir for cracks. Well, that turned out to be a huge PITA. So i nixed that idea & took the front wheel off to get into the wheel well. With all the light I could get I started pouring in water and searching for the leak. When things were not progressing, I ended up pulling out the fender liner (which I hate for the simple fact that the fender flares have to come off at least partially and you have to buy new rivets.)

To make the story short, I had to de-loom the giant wire harness running through the fender well/fender just to get to the washer fluid lines. They were taped up in the harness. I FINALLY discovered a pinhole leak in the line from the reservoir to the windshield sprayer. I pulled that line and took it to BMW in hopes they'd have one. No dice. They had to order the hose but also threw in a repair kit of a thing which I just didn't ask what it was about. So this is Thursday and my car is torn apart, wires exposed, can't drive it. Waiting until Monday or Tuesday to receive the part.

This afternoon I decide to go retape the harness and leave the washer lines out of the bundle. I peer at the repair kit they gave me (I bought) and low and behold that's all I needed! Cut the hole out, put in the new section of line and it all op checked good! All that damn work and pain just to replace a washer fluid line and to get rid of the warning message in the cluster :thud:

Well this weekend I did the following:
-Wash and Seal
-Airbag stickers on sunvisor delete (91% alcohol and a few cotton balls and about 20 mins)
-Air filter changed to AFE Pro Dry S panel filter (OE filter I retained in case I need to go to dealer, was filthy after 15k miles, which was when it was last changed according to service records)
-Oil Change - 8 quarts of Rotella T6*, OE filter, and Dimple Products magnetic drain plug

X is running quiet and wonderfully. Oil was black and dirty (although that is not an indication of protection), and the oil jockeys had 2 CRUSH WASHERS ON THE DRAIN PLUG - Stuff like that irks me to no end, and makes me happy to do the majority of my own maintenance.

*Cue flame suit and the GASPS because I didn't use LL-04 approved oil - I could give two shits about long term intervals, I change oil on any engine with a turbocharger every 7k-7500 miles max - super low SAPS is all I care about with the DPF and T6 is approved in that respect

I've been running the T6 this OCI as well. Hard to tell if I'm seeing any noticeable difference, as I was crunched for time when my X5D arrived to me back in July, so I had the Firestone across the street from my office do a quick change. I'm guessing they used some sort of Penzoil product, but no clue.

Likely going to go w/ Mobil 1 ESP next change (7.5k interval here as well, cause why not?) to see if I notice any difference in performance or regen.

Ricky Bobby 01-30-2017 03:26 PM

Like my E53 I noticed a bit quieter engine and running well so far. Absolutely no complaints. I know the 5w-30 is an across the board spec but with our heavy trucks I like the 5w-40 in all season temps (except maybe the frozen tundra) as I feel it gives a bit better wear protection being a touch heavier.

I've heard great things about ESP though - but considering I've used it for almost 4 years in 2 other vehicles and it's readily available at $21 a gallon at Wally World I will likely be sticking with T6 for the duration we own it.

I've been running Rotella during this OCI.

But, as a reminder, it's not BMW LL-04 approved.

But, as a reminder, it's not BMW LL-04 approved.

I run T6 as well - LL-04 is only necessary if you are doing factory long drain intervals - I do not, 7k-7500 miles tops - in these intervals T6 will be doing wonderful for your 35D engine -

T6 has low ash (1% spec vs. the BMW oil at .8%) so its perfectly fine on the DPF, you just don't want anything over 1% to be "within spec" and rated for DPF - I'll be changing out again in another 2-3k miles just because I want to do a couple short intervals to clear up any gunk that might have accumulated during the first 40k miles using 12k OCI's -

The engine runs super strong and quiet since changing out, I'm sure it was happy to get fresh oil and filter in there.

Ended up doing an oil change tonight, draining the Rotella. Last one was at 109K. Was at just over 114k, and iDrive said I had 1,400 miles left before oil service. Seems like I was trending short on this OCI.

Was very surprised at the crud accumulated on the filter. Having never changed a diesel before, not positive if that's normal or if it may be partially due to driving habits and/or oil used.

Filled with 8qts of Mobile 1 ESP 0w-30 and reset the service via Carly.

Took a short drive then measured via dip stick. Just about 3/4 between min and max. Perfect!

Added 2 gallons of DEF in the passive tank as well. Oddly, after a short drive, Carly still reported 6% level in the passive tank. May need to drive a bit longer for it to pull the new level.

imalabil 02-07-2017 06:40 PM

Not today, but Sunday...did the oil filter housing gaskets (cooler, too) and belt tensioner and idler. My N52 is much happier now! I also learned about the coolant bleed procedure!

limey 02-09-2017 10:23 AM

Added new Bimmereyes led halos, new 6000k headlight bulbs, new rear airbag on suspension fixed the valve cover gasket leaks and coolant leak from top of the engine. Now it's needs a good power polish and a new stop/start button.

Replaced valve cover gaskets and spark plugs. What a big job that was!!!

SeanC 02-24-2017 05:46 PM

What have you done to your E70 today?

Spark plugs
Valve cover gaskets
Upper timing chain cover gaskets
Valley pan
Various O-rings
Vacuum pump leak.
95 degree thermostat (running around 99-100 on the highway now as opposed to 106-108)

Did the rear pads and rotors on my '11 X5D the other night.

ABSOLUTE SHIT SHOW. I couldn't believe how hard it was to get the rotors off. So much rusty corroded gunk. Ended up using ratchet straps around a tree to pry one of them free, as no amount of human force and hammering could get it off.

Hoping the fronts go smoother. Temps have taken a dip here in MN, so I'll likely wait another week or so before I do the fronts. iDrive says I've got 10k left on those, but was -600 on the rears before I got them done.

ryan5034 02-24-2017 05:55 PM

What have you done to your E70 today?

That's a lot of work guys. I have sometimes had luck of loosening the rear lug bolts and driving in the driveway hitting the brakes hard. Some times that is enough to break the rust free.

Oh yea and it seems the rear is always the worst.

I did a power tailgate retrofit last weekend. Was actually a lot easier than others made it sound. Got my spindle drives & latch with micro switch off eBay for around $300 shipped. Got the hkl module & a wiring harness from a guy in Russia for $300 shipped. Because my module came from a Russian car it was already programmed to open and close using the dash button, the key fob, the exterior tailgate switch & the interior tailgate switch. It also came off an E71 X6 which doesn't have a lower tailgate so it will open and close without the bottom being closed. Will just bounce back if the lower tailgate is open, but in hindsight I didn't have to deal with swapping out the bottom latch & could have saved myself some money. It's also 1 less switch to worry about going bad & needing to be replaced. I had to cut 1 wire from going to the hkl module from the interior switch. My harness had 2 wires going to the module & 1 ground. This switch is simply run in parallel to the exterior switch & the wire color even match. Grey/yellow wire & brown go to same colors on exterior switch. The grey/blk wire was simply to power the red led on the interior switch & that's the only wire that actually needs to be run to the hkl module from the interior switch.
With the grey/yellow wire run to hkl module the trunk would open itself if the doors weren't locked. Once this wire was cut all was good.
Go for it......it really isn't that difficult

Took delivery on Wednesday. 2009 xDrive35d with 120k miles.

First thing on the to-do list is replacing the thermostat/water pump as the coolant temp is struggling to stay above 70C.

Then I'll be going through the brakes, as they are a little throbby despite low miles on them.

Next up, new rear air springs. They droop overnight.

Then, here eventually, I hope to do a DPF delete.

This is my wife's DD and our family truckster, so anything I can do to maximize the MPGs from the diesel is key.

Should I do an introduction thread? I've been lurking on here a while, but now I'm officially an owner!

Debadged trunk and doors - much more satisfied with the clean look now (been doing it on all my cars since I was 17 and this is the 3rd car I've done for my wife since we started dating in 2011)

Now the amber front is screaming at me, I need to drop the bumper and install the IND color matched side markers I bought (rears I already installed)

imalabil 03-13-2017 08:08 PM

Put an absorbent mat underneath to catch the drip or two of oil coming from the passenger front corner of the car. Too bad it snowed today, it makes it a little messy to crawl under there and see what's going on. I'm just wondering if it's still remnants of the oil dropped when I changed the oil filter adapter housing and oil cooler gasket. But that was a month ago period I would think all that would stop by now.

Finally mounted my new wheel setup. 20x11 Style 214 on all four corners, wrapped in 295/40R20 Falken FK-453 tires. 3mm spacer up front to clear knuckle, and a 30mm H&R spacer in the back to match. Nevermind the dirty paint... Went snowboarding over the weekend. ZERO rubbing whatsoever.

I don't think anyone has ever tried this fitment setup before... Happy to set it works great, allows for tire rotation, cheaper tire options, and a slightly taller sidewall for comfort.

They are Meyle arms and had the syncro design works monoboall's pressed in @ their shop. Failed getting them installed today as I was unable to get the balljoint to budge from the hub at all. After an hour at it I gave up.
Anyone have any tricks of the trade to share?

Drove 350 miles through the Appalachia region of North Carolina to pick up some cheap, new Arnott air springs.

Befor replacing the t-stat the truck was averaging 18.6 mpg. On this trip through various state and local highways, longs hills, and the occasional stop-and-go in-town driving, we managed 25mpg. Well worth the effort and sore knuckles from yesterday.

Hi,
Here is a great DIY that I followed for the TRSVC retrofit.
DIY - 2012 X5, OEM Backup / Reversing Camera Retrofit. How 2 Install for le$$ !!!

Note that if you are working with a Pre-LCI X5, as I was, you also must do the folllowing:
1. Replace the JBBF (Junction Box module under the glove box) with a newer LCI module
2. Extend all of the PDC sensor wires from the old PDC in the Left rear area to the new JBBF module (which has the PDC built into it)
3. Remove the old PDC module
4. Code the new JBB module

There are a number for DIYs on the NBT, but I purchased a kit from Bimmer Retrofit and their product has been perfect and their tech support even better...
If you want to do this retrofit, I HIGHLY recommend them!!

Enjoy,
John

throwing the fog light out code. Going to check getting it re-coded.

2. Repaired a leak from my headlight washer. Dealer did some repairs on my front end
and did not reattach the washer line back on. Found it and corrected.

3. Oil and filter change. NAPA Gold filter and Rotella T6 oil.

daytonatrbo 06-12-2017 12:13 PM

Yesterday I did the ATF change on my wife's 2009 xdrive35D.

While test driving it afterward the alternator crapped out. I ordered a cheap reman unit from Rock Auto, but I think I may look into rebuilding the OEM one myself. If I can get brushes and a new Reg/Rect it shouldn't be hard. I know the Reg/Rect from BMW is about $170.

The loss of control experienced was much worse than when the power steering goes out on an older vehicle. It really felt like the steering was fighting me as the dynamic drive functions started to fail due to low battery voltage. I'm glad it happened to me and not my wife.

Hah!! I got the idea to do this from your thread! I even bought the resistors. I also read that they get very hot and they will melt the plastic under there. I do not want that issue so I will look for the coder option first. How have yours been holding up so far?

Somewhat- just used a vacuum brake bleeder and took note of how much was in the container. I just filled to when it started dripping. Very close to the exact same amount so was comfortable with it.

I bought a new battery, but I'm afraid I can't install it yet because I don't have a working ISTA install to register it with, and I don't have time to order a new CARLY interface.

I picked up a Sport wheel and had to swap out the airbag and install it with the sport cover.

For those who want to swap steering wheel covers here's an easy way to do it.

The cover has built in clips which lock the airbag in place, the problem is you have to gently pry up each clip so you can shimmy the airbag away from the cover.

I found the best way is to pry away the clip and then slide a dime under the clip to hold it from snapping back into place. This lets you release all of the clips at once then you can work the airbag from the cover:

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...7f81216e21.jpg

Once you have the airbag out , gently pack it into the sport cover.

Update: So after driving with the sport wheel I noticed it's not centered and slightly off- the spline is slotted so there is only one way to install the wheel. I'm wondering if a front end alignment will cure this?

Anyone have similar issues? I plan on installing front h&r springs so I'll get a 4 wheel alignment after.

see pics: https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...5a04750391.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...82ac35231a.jpg

kakalika 07-07-2017 07:06 PM

Try to find a shop in your area with a modern Hunter laser alignment machine.

Deftronix 07-08-2017 08:17 PM

The spline doesnt have a space for 3-4 teeth adjustment on either side? I know the wheel & spline have marks for center but could have sworn there was a couple teeth left/right adjustment?

efifty 07-08-2017 08:22 PM

I don't think so-- There are the two marks for alignment but there is a flat spot on the spline and inside wheel. I'm going to do a search vs take off for the 3x.

Wife took my daughter and some friends (who sat in the third row) up to our cottage. She had to use the X5 as there was 5 kids. Roof box was used since there is no trunk space with the 3rd row in use

rh71 07-12-2017 10:10 PM

^ how do you get stuff up to that roof box easily? I'm thinking of adding that accessory as we are traveling more for sports now.

Do you use a ladder or do the side rails help? Stepping inside the rear door? I also recall seeing a solution that hooks onto the tire?

blue dragon 07-12-2017 10:15 PM

I just step on the running boards. My wife has it a little tougher to get into roofbox, so I typically mount it all the way to one side to make it a bit easier, and she may use the inside of the rear door to reach stuff all the way inside the roofbox.

Had AC colder on drivers side then passenger. Was 38 degrees one side and 65 on the other. So I bought one of those AC Pro Refill kits. Shot some freon in there, air now blows in the 28 degrees out of both center vents. Kick ass.

Had FRM module replaced under warranty all tho the only symptom was a frm communications error on rheingold.

first visit they logged the error and erased it ( i told them the windows would now roll down ocasionally i lied)
second visit they replaced it and proceeded to struggle for 4 days as the new module would not communicate with programming hardware.

I guess the moral of the story is do not attempt to program the frm module as they are brittle and temperamental.

Got 30 degrees out of the main vent with a 97 degree ambient temp.

So today was my turn at glow plug, module, swirl flaps, and a few vaccum hoses that were crap - should have done more hoses but was tired of it.

Took about 5 hours in total - overall things went ok - getting the back nut off and dealing with the stupid BMW connectors was the hardest part. I'm deleted so no EGR removal issue

Then I removed the mid-pipe and shipped the DDE off to DUDMD.

Still need to remove the DPF. Not looking forward to that.

No, sir. Dry as a bone. Unfortunately I busted my silicone that was keeping the windshield trays together.

Not because I had to, just because I'm clumsy.

Might still be worth a look, mine didnt get water until i drilled a hole in the bottom of the DDE case.

THEN the water came in.

It's from aarodriguez - everything matches up just fine. Yes, its pretty oily in there... I don't have any major leaks to the ground, I loose about 1 quart every 7000 miles.

Red charge hose and one of the turbo oil hoses should be replaced at some point but I'm deep enough in the car already... replacing stuff as needed.

2011 X5 35d 110K service this month in order:

-Thermostat and water pump. Replaced original 2011 parts on the engine as the waterpump had the plastic impeller and metal gasket.
-Replaced Trans fluid thermostat.
-Checked and cleaned turbos
-Removed and cleaned charge pipes and intercooler of CCV oil.
-Installed Provent CCV fix.
-Removed intake manifold, cleaned carbon and sludge, replaced all seals. Decoked egr valve and degreased throttle body.
-Drained refilled both diffs and transfer case with Ravenol fluids.
-Drained transmission, changed filter, and filled with Mercron SP.
-changed engine Intake, and cabin filters.
-Engine oil change using Ravenol oil and mahle filter
-Coolant flush and fill.
-replaced serpentine and ac belts

Collected parts and stuff for a couple months and got after it. X5 was down two weeks but in the end it was worth the work. Should be good for another 100k.

Getting the AC stretch belt out of the way is the only hard part. You can get a tool, but you still need to turn the crank. Some just use the pulley bolt, but I made a tool to turn the crank by the hub of the pulley.

For the AC belt I got the Lisle tool from amazon and one of those crank hub adapters with the 4 holes from ebay. $40 bucks total for the two tools. I cut the old belts off since I had new conti belts to replace them with. The serpentine was tedious due to routing issues but I left it out in the sun for a while for it to "lose" its carboard holder memory and be easier to put on the pulleys. The ac belt with the lisle tool went on in a snap.
