I have found someone local to me who has the tools and setup to do this.

Doru,
Is it 20 minutes for GKE and 20 minutes for ASC to update? Any special instructions or catch/weary situations you came across I should watch out for?

Doru, thanks for the note about the ASC update required when doing the GKE update (maybe edit your first post and put that in there too?)
I'll have to tackle this now as my 2005 X5 4.4i started hard shifting badly yesterday after driving from Banff to Calgary... nuts.
I have the software just not experience, so perhaps you dont mind an e-mail from me if I get stuck?
Cheers

Doru,
My 4.8 is is pro date 9/2005, I presume that this does not apply to my truck? Should I look to see if I have latest software update on GEK and ASC?

Thanks Ted

OK, so I used the SSS Progman software and update the Tranny Software and DSC (ASC is on pre-facelifted X's) and I got the EGS reloaded with software again but at the end, it said failed to clear fault memories and failed another operation but successfully installed 7564917 again (was already my programmed number). It failed cause i didnt turn ignition back on after the 10 second break. When the software says "checking vehicle voltage..." after the 10 sec break you need to put key back to ignition 2 setting so software can then reset the fault memory and adjust ckm setting. I loaded the tranny software a second time and by putting key back to ignition 2 again, the software installed perfectly that time.
My experience is a bit different from Doru's from the fact that I did not have an option for selecting GKE, but as the SIB instructions show, I had only the EGS module on the right hand side of SSS Progman to select. So I selected update Software. I was never asked for a Program Number or a Basic Number so I'm not sure what the EGS Programmed number and EGS Basic number are used for.
SSS Progman TOLD me I had currently loaded the 7564917 and could reload it with same. So I did.
As for DSC update, yeah that software had an update for it and its now updated. After that update SSS Profman said i now needed to calibbrate the Steering Angle sensor so i went ahead and did that too.
Not sure where you select GKE module from to be honest, unless you select the MANUAL update button??

I know this is the e53 forum, but my e53 is shifting fine. It is my e70 that has been troublesome. We did the mechanical/fluid/gasket service earlier this year, following an electrical problem that created several gremlins (turned out just to be a very loose cable on battery, go figure). Now it has started holding gears too long (late shifting) and sometimes feels like it is slipping or sloppy shifting. Shifts much smoother in "sport" mode. Any idea if I should try these software updates or look elsewhere for the trouble?

Sorry guys, I'm going through a rough patch right now.

For the facelifted e53 (or 6HP tranny), use/select EGS in SSSProgman. There is no GKE "scripted" in the software. The SIB refers to it as: "EGS/GKE" so it's clear the mechatronic module is referred to (GKE) and not transmission module (EGS).

When programming, have the power supply attached to the +/- under the hood. Make sure the battery is fully charged prior to this.
During the programming be patient. There will be moments when it would seem like nothing is going on, or the clock (counter) would go the opposite way. It's normal. Just tough it out and wait. I know, you can start questioning yourself during that stage. Patience is a virtue. And Progman pretty much guides you through the process.

Once the re-flash (programming) is successful, you have to perform the 1-2 tip-in procedure, like this:
Start the car, and drive at moderate speed. While driving (a quiet residential area is the best), come 5-6 times to a stop. Every time you stop, MAKE SURE you perform a FULL STOP. COUNT TO 5, then start driving again. After 5-6 full stops, park the car, and let sit for 1/2 hour. Done.

Concerning the 4.8 - it's the same as the 4.4 (facelift), the only (significant) difference would be the EGS programmed number and the EGS basic number when doing the re-flash.

Concerning the e70 - I am not sure what transmission it has, but ANY electrical problem on these cars - doesn't matter what model/series they are - from sedans to coupe to SAV - can cause a glitch in any of the modules. I am not sure about the other modules, but my X had the mechatronics module glitched 100% (the GKE, formerly known as EGS in the pre-facelift models or simply: transmission module). A transmission re-flash does not hurt. It could actually mend the issue.

As an example, in the defunct e39, a bad, but otherwise fully functional ballast (yes, I know, go figure), caused all kinds of electrical gremlins. That one was b*tch to trace down. Do a search with the key words: "flashers on, dome light on, crash recognition program", and you might even find my post. Numerous BMW's had that issue, no one figured it out.

Doru,

Thanks for both replies above, and I hope your rough patch leads to something great!

ok so I'm talking with BCRedliner in another thread about the benefits of the Dinan CAI (which I just installed) and the Dinan software you can buy to help that CAI be more useful... and in the talk he got me wondering about the aftermarket ECU tune I have on 4.4i (this is what the ecs programming company said about their stage 1 tune they have for me: "Our tune stage 1 for BMW 4.4 includes optimized timing using 91 (I use 91 99.9% of time) or 94 octane, sharper throttle, speed limiter off, RPM increased by 250"

I have an aftermarket tune BUT I just had to re-flash my tranny with SSS Progman to clear up the hard shift from 2-1st gear I was experiencing... this reflash I did a few nights ago would have not affected the aftermarket tune I paid for years ago would it? they are different modules of the vehicle if I'm not mistaken. And truth be told, my tranny seems snappier now after reflash.
So now I'm wondering if I did do the Dinan tranny software for a facelifted e53, maybe THAT tune would not negate the aftermarket tune I have.
Perhaps I'm wrong in my understanding though...

I had my transmission software updated earlier this week to resolve the harsh shift between 1st and 2nd. And the thunk is gone.

Now it feels like my X is always in sport mode, which I'm not sure that I love. It seems to want to stay in a lower gear and accelerates much more quickly than before. There is less of a difference between "drive" and "sport" now.

Anyone else notice this?
