Been there and honestly it's cheaper to keep her honestly. These are some very delicate machines tuned for performance which makes them more likely to need repairs. That being said they like quality parts in order to give enjoyment of driving them. Yes one can get Japanese point a to b appliances but it's not the same. That's coming from someone that drove Japanese for a decade.

Oh man, sad to hear... But as Anhelenuk said: keep it, you know what you have fixed, spending a "little" more to fix the rest and you are fine. If you sell it now, you won't gain much money i suppose and then you will have to buy a "new" car with new problems...
Trifecta on a pre facelift e53? No xdrive, so maybe "only" an ABS sensor or is that caused by the ABS pump? |

Our X5 is our family wagon, you have to love it to want to own it. Also, I understand that its a 10 year old BMW and will require parts/maintenance and I don't like the next version x5 and only like the latest F15 model.... which I can not afford. So, where that leaves me is... with a ageing luxury car that will cost me a few quid on the odd occasion. However, its a beast, still looks great today and I get in so many new cars these days and I am just disappointed with there features , that I have these features on my X5 and its either missing / not as good or even they somehow botch it and it doesn't work the right way. BMW's Pan Roof is a great example, I love mine... yes, I had problems with it and needed the fix to make it work again. But every other Pan Roof I have seen is rubbish including the Discovery or Q7. Basically, get the spanners out, learn to repair it, feel good about keeping it on the road and love the fact that you could have spent the evening in front of the TV watching Walking Dead but you did something productive instead.
PS. I love Walking Dead, so if you do choose to spend your evenings watching that then you will hear no complaints from me.

Your are right Lamby: our cars are luxury products in the price range (new) between about 60.000 and 100.000 €/$. Even if they are cheap to buy now, they are not allways cheap to service. Yes they require service but you have to decide if it's worth this investment or you have to go with any other option - most of these other options are not really comparable in this price range and they will also eat money.
I know people complaining about spending for example 500€ into their car which runs perfect despite a single broken part and selling it for a 30.000€ somehow "new" car which makes about >20.000 € difference.

Over the weekend I saw the movie Legend* with Tom Hardy. It opens with a brief monologue from his love interest - the final line really sums up my relationship with my X5.
"Believe me when I say it took a lot of love for me to hate him the way I do." * Total side note - Tom Hardy is excellent, and if you haven't seen Locke go do that. It's an absolutely riveting movie - the entire thing is Hardy driving an X3 down the highway and making phone calls.

1iwilly - good man, keep us up to date and if we can help with any advice let me know.
As for Legend, great film... I like it when they are in the pub its an "arranged meeting" between the Krays and Richardson. Ronnie say to the rival gang's muscle who is supposedly carrying a weapon, "What's that, a rolling pin? What are you going to do with that? Bake me a cake? This is a SHOOT OUT, and you bring GUNS to a SHOOT OUT!!! LIKE A WESTERN!" Then pushes them aside to walk out the door saying "Waste of my f****** time!"

I've noticed that on a handful of German cars lately. I compared my friend's 435i to my E93 and E53 and have to say the build quality was much better on the older cars - even the plastic bits. Another friend just bought a Mercedes C class and the interior looks and feels like a Hyundai (though, FWIW, Hyundai's are annoyingly nice for what they are).
