Either way, where I live it gets so damn hot, that
parts that don't do well in the heat fair regularly.

It's not much of an expense to swap out for preventative maintenance.
I pulled the cowling screen and popped off the electrical cover.
I found the module and it looks easy to change.

I am getting a whirring noise and need to investigate the belt drive system.
It's a pulley, or alternator or something there that spins.
Greg when you had the valve stems replaced did you mechanic inspect the timing guides and timing chain? My 4.6is had the whirring sound and it was the timing guides which they are notorious for. The N62 is not as prevelant with regards to timing guides and chains but there have been a couple of instances with the N62.

I had my Indy do EVERYTHING.
including the alternator bracket oring.

The whirring noise is external.

Smart man.Having that eliminated should make finding the culprit pretty easy. Check the belt tensioners first make sure they are correctly working then move on the to alternator pulley, AC pulley, pwr steering pulley etc.

My 4.4 N62 has had this weird intermittent stumble when idling for quite a while. And also often what felt like a short hesitation or misfire when gunning it from standstill.
I followed the procedure from spudge's link and low and behold, my IVM had bad (cold) solderings exactly as described. I was actually surprised it had worked at all in that condition.
I fixed it in 10 min. with 0.1 cents worth of soldering wire, and not only has both the idling stumble and the hesitation gone away. But it also starts from cold with quite a lot more 'oomph' and vigor than before.

I highly recommend all N62 owners to check the solderings inside their IVM, either to perform the fix, or at least to check if the issue is there or not.

I'm glad I found out about this.
I thought I had an idle air leak.
But after my Indy did the valve stem seals,
and it still fluttered at idle, I ruled that out.
Looking forward to installing new unit and doing
autopsy on factory IMV.

can hear it. It has done this since I have owned it.

I have no codes, very good gas mileage, great power.
I only get the stumble at idle, don't see or feel it at cruise RPM.

Any ideas where to start looking?
Hi , I changed my vanos solenoids, Man what a difference , It's like driving a new car, Tranny is shift right on the money , gas mileage is much better, it's like the whole dynamic's of the car is back to new , low new is awesome,I got my highway star back.Looks like i Finally discovered BMW V8 secret!!! --------UPDATE---------

I installed the new module today.
It seemed to cure my idle fluttering problem.
It seems like the idle RPM is bumped up to where it seems normal.

power seemed more improved and the shifting seemed more in tune
with the speed and RPM.

Now all there is left is to open up your old IVM module and spend 5 mins to fix those cold/broken solderings and sell it 'working as new' on eBay to cover some of your expences.

What's the part number for this IVM? I have the same issue, especially when A/C is turned off- it idles so low as if it'd turn off and also it does stumble now and then. It's been like this for years.
