Hard shift (feel and hear a dump) when shifting cold.
I notice and feel a dump when then the gear get out of 1st going into 2nd. This happens when I use very little gas trying to maintain 10-15 mph. When the dump happens I back off the gas. |

Try a transmission fluid drain and fill. I had the same issues, the drain and fill solved it for me.

If I can tell I'm in engine warm up cycle...but traffic or other circumstances don't allow for "taking it easy"...I just slip the gear shift lever into the S gate...and this cancels the EWC (engine warm-up cycle)...and there's no abrupt 1st-to-2nd shift. The next time you have a cold engine and the RPM is high and it feels/sounds like it doesn't want to shift into 2nd...try moving the gearshift into the S (sport) gate. This will take the vehicle out of the adaptive drive mode (cancel the engine warm up cycle)...then see if your shift into 2nd gear is smoother. If it is...then the issue is (probably)...you're pushing out of the engine warm up cycle which happens if you go faster than 25 MPH etc before the operating temps reach the specific degree (see info below about engine warm up cycle & normal things that causes it to end): ![]()

I'm having the same issue with my 2005 4.8iS. When I suggested a transmission service (including transmission filter) to my Indy, he recommended I take the truck to the dealer, as he didn't want to be liable for the transmission failing after the service, implying that it's happened in the past. Mind you, I am not ascribing to his theory, especially that I had an e38 in the past and one of the 1st things I did after buying it, was to perform a complete transmission service on it, without any ill effects. I've heard the "don't disturb the transmission oil" theory a couple of times before, and it always gives me pause when I'm contemplating an oil change or a service. Thoughts? I read the same on the forums. I was super hesitant but I figured after 14 years and the X5 not being worth much, I'd give it a try. I didn't replace the filter. I did the least amount possible to not disturb the transmission. My drain and fill doesn't replace all of the fluid either, I think 1/3 of it. So I figured I'm not shocking the transmission with totally different fluid. In 10k miles, I'll do another drain and fill to freshen the fluid some more. So far, after 2k miles, I've had no ill effects. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

re tranny service. I did a drain and fill plus filter about 5k miles ago
re tyranny service. I did a drain and fill plus filter about 5k miles ago. Although if you look at my pass post, I can only put in 1.25 quart short of the tranny oil I took out. Have been look into putting alternative ways to put in more tranny oil since.
May warn up is the issue. I usually try to target 2min. But I don't think I even did 2min when the dump happen. I will try to make sure I got 3min. |

Fixed this in my car by adding 1 liter of oil (60 euro).
I think in my case the cause was replacement of the radiator, I suspect some tranmission oil was spilled. Next step if it wasn't cured by this for me would be service by ZF (675 Euro), next step after this revised transmission (3200 Euro).... Car is currently @220k KM's. |
