I had very similar rough idle condition that would disappear at 1K rpm or when AC compressor was engaged. The problem turned out to be a cracked valve cover.

After replacement, I did a quick 440 mile turnaround trip between Dallas and Houston averaging 71 mph and 23.5 mpg with no more rough idle. It was a surprising solution.

Srmm....

Interesting. I literally had my trim cover off this weekend, eyeballing, planning , and a visual inspection. Did you see a crack in your valve cover visually ?

I'm chasing a oil leak that does not appear to be gasket related...but the only visually spotting is under the car with a light...

I didn't see it, but the tech said it was cracked on the interior edge of the gasket surface at the rear. I was definitely losing oil from it though.

Srmmm..I hope you sourced a used one. Maybe even had it ~beautified~ with fresh powder or paint...

So I had these exact same symptoms, and the cure for me was replacing the CCV and all related hoses/tubes. Mine were original and had 130k on them. The plastic can develop cracks and cause little vacuum leaks. Definitely not the most fun job I have ever done, but the results were well worth it. BMW master tech that I know suggested this would be my issue after telling him the list of things I had already done and he was right. Hope this helps someone out.

I have the M54 3.0 six cylinder which uses a plastic valve cover that has metal inserts in it, so when it's cracked...it's cracked.

I'm having the exact same problems and recently replaced power distribution box in the ECU box to no avail. The CCV and associated stuff were replaced when I did the valve covers. I suspect it's a vacuum leak somewhere. I also already cleaned the MAF and replaced the vanos solenoids. The motor mounts are originals but I doubt that's the problem although replacement is in the works - they're just sitting in my garage (I'm notorious for buying parts but hardly ever finding time to install them, sometimes for over a year ).
